Show Page ISb The Utah Enterprise Review , January 19, 1977 Utahs Future -- Partnerships A Bright Spot by Chuck Akerlow Austin Kiplinger has been publishing a Washington Letter since 1923, one in which he makes all kinds of predictions about the future and advises his clients concerning present business trends. His projections show a national population of 240 million people by 1990, which is a 12 increase. The significant thing about the increase is not its number, but rather its age mix. By 1990 the largest group in the population will be in ages between 25 and 44 years. At present 55 million peopel fall in that category. By 1990 there will be 78 million people. The important point here is that this is the age group which comprises the main work force, the moneymakers and most importantly, the spenders. People's shopping habits over the last five years have begun to shift from purchasing only needs" to purchasing "wants." This fact, coupled with an increased number of affluent shoppers, portends a great possibility for the national retail economy. The growth trend by states shows that the population shift is to the south and the west. In the states of Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Ari zona and New Mexico, Kiplinger expects an over 25 increase in population by 1990. This percentage increase is projected to take place in a span of only thirteen years. Wyoming, Colorado and Texas will see increases of between 21 while California and and Oregon are expected to and grow between 16 25, . A. Sinclair and F. W. Sinclair Ltd., E. A. Sinclair and F. W. So the Salt Lake market will enjoy unusual growth particularly since growth in Utah tends to be centralized on the Wasatch Front within reach of all major shopping centers. It is my view that if the state continued its conservative monetary policies and if the present rate of growth stabilizes, Utahs population by 1990 could easily be 1.4 million. Our unemployment rate is down and the availability of investment capital is better than it has been during the last ten years. All signs point to a healthy Utah economy, but without the problems associated with a boom.
