Nick Scott, executive vice presi- Chuck Akerlow Governor-elec- Soctt t Mathesons recent appoint- ment of the Director for Development Services in the State leaves this writer with a disconcerted feeling. The appointment made was of Mike Miller, Governor Hamptons Executive Assistant. The post to which Miller was appointed oversees the Divisions of Industrial Promotion, Travel, History, the State Fair, and Fine Arts. The two biggest operations in that department are I i Industrial Promotion and Travel. Of major concern to this writer is Industrial Pro- motion. This division has been responsible for the creation of many new jobs in Utah and has developed a close working relationship with the local business community as well as with clients nationally. The present Director of Developmental Services, Milton Weilenmann, himself a businessman, has administered Industrial Promotion with a fair degree of skill and foresight. His input to the Industrial Promotion Council as well as its staff has been professional and While Weilenmann had enormous difficulty in the first few years keeping Industrial Promotion properly staffed, recently it has stabilized and many of us in the business community find it to be a helpful mate in developing new industry in Miller has never been known for his objectivity in He is a fierce politics. Democrat and a Rampton loyalist whose chief governmental experience thus far has been to assist in waging the governors political battles. Development Services needs a businessman or a professional administrator at its head. Miller is neither. Industrial Promotion is no place for politically motivated people. It suffered most when it was staffed by aggressive Democrat earlier. MORTGAGE RATES FIIA 8.0 Vi VA 8.0 This is not to say that he cant change. But for the benefit of all Utahns it is to be hoped that Miller will refrain from taking an active role in industrial promotion and development until he has learned something about the business of industrial development. And it is to be hoped that Miller will lay aside his partisan armor and recognize that most of the local business community is not only Republican, but also is not wildly enthusiastic about his appointment. If Miller will exercise great restraint in his first few months in office, he could become a useful director of development services. As for non-partisa- n. Utah. realtors board said the $10,091,388 figure for the week was unattributable to anything substantial, but said the exceptional sales week is indicative of a growing market. It was just a very good week, he said. Average residential price for 207 homes closed during the week was $42,748. Total residential listing for the week was dent of the $8,848,805, up 36 percent from the week ending December 3. A total of 14 multiple unit dwellings (apartments and duplexes) sold last week for $877,450, up 51 percent over the week prior. Average multiple unit price was $62,675. Industrial properties reflected the only drop in sales for all real estate catagories, down 28 percent. Seven industrial properties sold for $80,000. Vacant lots sold for $285,133 on 11 properties. A total of 235 properties sold during the week compared to 169 properties a week Governor-elec- t Matheson, this writer hopes that his future appointments will be of people who appear to have professional credentials to supervise the departments in which they are called upon to serve. We do not believe that an individuals number one criteria for a state post, is that he was an active partisan member of the Rampton administration. In fact, I believe that his party credentials are the least important part of his resume. These rates were obtained by telephone conversation with the above institutions.
