Show The Enterprise Review , December IS , 1976 Page 3b Building Code Amendment Draws Heated Arguments Owners of about 70 apartment houses or hotels in Salt Lake City would be effected by the city commissions decision to adopt an alternate fire prevention tool in the building code. The decision, which the commission expected to make this Tuesday, w'ould determine if owners of exist- ing residential buildings be able to install smoke detectors instead of w'ould enclosing stairways or fire stalling in- sprinkler systems. The commission delayed making the decision after hearing heated arguments during a public meeting Dec. 8. At the hearing, spokesmen representing apartment house owners, the fire protection industry and the city building and housing and fire departments shot allegations of misrepresentation and statistical evidence back and forth for over an hour missioner Glen Greener opposed the change, saying he has not seen any proof that smoke detectors save lives any better than sprinkler systems.
