BEFORE LAST August, tne biological laboratory phase of field-testiof a certain biological agent usually involved the inoculation of guinea pigs. The animals were used in a macro-tuli- e complement fixation test to detect reactions to the agent. Now, as a result of certain modifications, the same experiments may be successfully completed at a much lower cost. The major change has been the replacement of guinea pigs with laboratory mice. The mice are not only initially less expensive; the costs of maintaining and processing them is also lower. ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT modification occured when laboratory workers adapted micro-assa- y procedures to the complement fixation test, resulting in major economies in man-houand reagents. In addition to substantial monetary savings, the modified g of the biological agent to be comtechnique allowed pleted on schedule without any compromise in the quality of the data which was compiled. The modifications in techniques for biological testing were carried out under the Department of Armys Cost Reduction Program. This program was established in 1962 with several specific ing procurement and logistics management; reducing costs of operating the Defense establishment, without impairing effectiveness; and improving the general effectiveness of government operations. ? rs field-testin- goals-improv- COMMANDER WILLIAM C.
