Show 16 Lakeside Review, Tuesday, May 15, 1990 LakesideCommunity Nonphotogenic? Blame it on camera By SHARON NAUTA STEELE Lakeside Review columnist What on earth are you doing? asked my daughter the day I walked in her bedroom and found her methodically applying some kind of warpaint to her face. With Halloween more than a few months past. I couldnt even begin to guess why she had used my brand-neslightly peaches powdered blush to inscribe a U shaped line beneath each cheek. I hope youre not going punk on me? i exclaimed. 1 dont think I'd like you with green and orange hair. "No way. Mom! Im just try ing to accentuate my cheekbones. You could have knocked me over with my blush brush. I hadnt even known the word accentuate was in her vocabulary. Whats more I lacked the imagination to figure out how a girl who refused to eat meat because the sight of bones made her sick could possibly be interested in accentuating her cheekbones. So tell me why you want to accentuate your cheekbones? I began my inquisition. Are you planning on entering a Bugs Bune contest or what? ny "Not hardly. Mom! Were getting school pictures taken tomorrow. and I want to be more photogenic. Photogenic people always have accentuated cheekbones. That I could understand. Getting my picture taken is not my favorite thing. Im always a little disappointed when I look at a photograph of me and see myself staring back at me instead of Far-a- h Fawcett or Christie Brinkley or Liz Taylor in her thinner days. Whenever I get my picture taken indoors, the lights make me blink, the air conditioner messes up my hair and a fly lands in an embarrassing place. Whenever I get my picture taken outdoors the sun makes me squint, the wind messes up my' hair, and two flies land in embar- I vV t Rain or Shine w Dazzled by the songs of Disney, Kara Pitts watches the performance at Columbia Elementary put on by the Da- - . vis High Childrens Theatre troupe. Then theres my friend Golda. Shes so photogenic that broken camera lenses repair themselves when they focus on her. You could take her picture first thing in the morning before she even got out of bed, and nine out of 10 women who saw the resulting snapshot would pay money to know who did her hair. Photographers never have to tell Golda to, Say Cheese, or tilt her head a certain way, or throw her shoulders back. She never squints, blinks, slouches, or attracts flies if theres a camera in the room. And from the way her mouth knows how to behave when flashbulbs are popping, youd swear that woman had smiling lips. When Golda gets her picture taken, she relaxes. When I get my picture taken I start wondering if I have petrified trees somewhere in my pedigree. When Golda ran for Junior Prom Queen in college, she was named Most Photogenic. When I ran, I was named Most Likely to Cause Severe Damage to Any Lens Pointed My Way. No wonder my darling little girl, whom everyone says looks so much like me, thinks she has to accentuate her cheekbones before sitting for her school picture. Shes seen my old yearbook pictures and she agrees with me: The best one I ever had was the one labeled, Photo unavailable. 13-1- GE band Bemie, are the parents of four children, Jerry, DeeAnn, Jennifer and Bernie, Jr. They have 16 grandchildren and eight presented, among other events.
