Friday, May 18: Mountain men, Indians gather By DEENA JONES Standard Examiner correspondent MounSOUTH WEBER tain men and Indians were spotted recently at South Weber Elementary School during the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous earlier this month. The event, which has been held for four vears. is organized bv Julie Gillmore, a fourth-grad- e teacher at the school. Mrs. Gillmore and her husband have been involved in various mountain man rendezvous for si vears. and she decided the activity with her students so they could also experience the excitement and culture of the early mountain men. Rendezvous means meeting place, said Mrs. Gillmore. and mountain men and Indians would meet at certain times during the year to exchange items and socialize. Early mountain men adopted many of Indian customs, said Mrs. Gillmore. and because of their respect for the land, the Indians tolerated them more than they did many other early white settlers. Preparation for the event started several weeks ago, Mrs. Gillmore said. re Students started by making items to trade with each other. The children made jewelry out of shells and rocks, spears, belts made by finger weaving, bolo ties, deer and elk jerky and homemade bread. "This was one of the most creative groups we have had so far, she said. I couldnt believe the quality of the items the children had brought to trade. The children were encouraged to dress either as Indians or mountain men, and more than 90 percent of the students did. Some of the children attend rendezvous with their parents, and had the authentic leather costumes for the event. A large Indian tepee was erected to authenticate the event. Manager's Choice.
