Show Politics interesting xx x culture in study With the. county conventions View behind us, l am reminded of something my father told me Marilyn Teri Hurst Savage Bruce Nielson. Norm Eddy about Grandpa and politics. Dad said the only reason my grandfather supported womens suffrage was because he figured he, and other married men, would end up getting two votes. Knowing Grandma, though. Im sure it didn't work out that way. Butv either way, politics and the family have always been an interesting, study in American culture. For instance, in my family political affiliation means nothing. My wife and I register in separate parties as was the custom with my parents. This is done for practical reasons. Our family was always assured at least one vote ini either the publican or the Democratic primary and we are able to get all that throw-awa- y campaign rhetoric from both parties in the mail before any primary. When the sample ballots are received in the mail, my wife and I sit down together and go over who we favor in each primary. (My once did we disagree, and my wife ended up voting for a candidate in her primary who I didnt favor. I was a little frustrated at the time because there was no cross-ovvoting in Arizona and I wasnt able to vote for the candidate I wanted. Kind of the way I feel about the county conventions in Utah. Because of the way the conventions are held, some potential candidates are eliminated from races before any voting is done. It kind of gives an inordinate amount of power to a minority. But, I really shouldnt complain, because I could easily have gotten involved in the grassroots level of the mass meetings and been able to pick a delegate just like anyone else. County conventions and mass meetings arent the best way of selecting candidates because they tend to favor political machines and organized campaigns that Elizabeth Johnson Where should city funds go? City councils around the state are in the process of establishing their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. With so many projects demanding attention and only a' limited amount of funds available, budgeting is always a delicate bal- anting process. The Lakeside Review asked residents from the surrounding community what projects they would like to see money set .. aside for in their city. Since Marilyn Savage, Roy Roy City tore the tennis courts out of Municipal Elementary we dont have anywhere close to play tennis. I think they should build more courts and also they need to upgrade the outdoor Municipal Swimming Pool too. That is our kids entertainment. It keeps them off of the streets. They need to build more baseball diamonds at the park too. Teri Hurst, Clearfield - We need to put more money toward attracting new busi- . flbis little Street talk . nesses in Clearfield. I think the council ought to think about that. We give the business to Layton and now we have to compete with the mall. We shouldnt run businesses out of our , city. - The land above Freeport, behind Hardees was a good area for Clearfield, but we went and let Layton develop it. Bruce Nielson, Kaysville - I think Kaysville should put more money into their parks and recreation. They have done a super job up to now, though. But there is always a crowding with softball and soccer fields and there should be new ones built to solve that. We have a really nice city building and they have done a super job maintaining the streets, but I just think the recreation could use some new fields, Norm Eddy, Clinton - Our schools always need help with supplies. But we really need street improvements. 2300 North is in pretty bad shape. And there are a lot of roads in my area near there that are bad and they have been like that for quite a while. Ive talked with our city manager (Gary Uresk) about the problem and he had a pothole filled right in front of his house. It did take a while for that to get filled too. Elizabeth Johnson, West Point - I would like to see the park that they have been talking about in lower West Point put in. We also need sidewalks on 4500 West. A lot of kids walk that road on their way to church. I think its unsafe as it is er now. We also need an equestrian riding park. A lot of people have horses down here and it isnt good to have to ride on the roads. at-lar- ge fi cflftSrlroGHoip aviA park develop toteni' point Andy Howell editor Davis County if f can get their followers out, and shuts out the little guy or individual who is trying to challenge the good ol boy network. But such politics is a part of Americana, and while not all states pick candidates the same, democracy is the end result. , Americans can be schizophrenic in they way they pick their politicians anyway. : Take national campaigns. Americans seem to have no problem voting for a Republican presidential candidate and a Democratic congressman on the same ballot. Weve only had one Democratic president since 1968, but the Democrats almost always j control Congress. Surveys seem to indicate thht most Americans ascribe to tlie Republican position on foreign policy, but tend to favor the Democratic platform on domestic policy. Since the presidency !is seen as a position that formulates foreign policy, Republicans get elected. Americans think the Democratic party is the party of the little guy and can best help them with the problems of employment or pollution in their own backyard, so they send Democrats to Congress. Utah, and some other Western states, are of course an exception to this rule, as the GOP domi- nates. But doomsayers who point to Utah and other states and say one party has too much power should look more closely. What theyll see is that the Republican party in Western states has divisions within itself when it comes to local politics, so its not much different than if there were two strong parties. As long as there are contested races, then democracy is at work. I - ! Government directory Davis County Commissioners Commissioner Bill Peters (R) Davis County Courthouse ' 28 E. Why is Mrs. Diane Hancey having her husband write her letters for her? It was Mrs. Hancey who walked out of the audI office itors $3.000-a-ye- to accept raise, before the ar a au- ditor could go through the budget process to get her a raise? Is she afraid that if Mrs. Ken- that she nington gets will find some of Mrs. Hanceys errors, if they audit her work, since she was the head bookkeeper in the auditors office? Just because Mrs. Kennington has turned the office from a bookkeeping office into an auditing office, is Mrs. Hancey bitter? Rumor has it that Mrs. Hancey is looking forward to becoming Mr. Rushforths deputy. Is she afraid Mrs. Kennington has had too much name recognition, so she had her husband write a letter? Commissioner Lawrence has been a Republican commissioner taxpayers money and then changing their minds and buying a larger piece in Farmington, being efficient or conservative, or holding taxes down? Especially when the piece in Kaysville happens to be a piece of property that no one else wants, so they cant even sell it? Is paying a county auditor, who has been elected by the people, yet prevented her from doing her job, being efficient or conservative, or holding down taxes? Especially when they spend $20,000 a year to hire their own auditors, and then tell them they can look at only certain meetings in the past year, I have copies of the minutes and tape recordings of the meetings. I did join the Independent Party when it was first organized in Davjs County. However, in February, when I realized the Independent Party had no candidates, I officially, by letter, resigned from the Independent Party at that time. When I attended the Republican caucus in my district, I resented having a finger pointed at me by a former Mayor of Bountiful, and at the same time making derogatory remarks about the Independent Party and the Davis County Independent Party chairman. I resented being treated as an infiltrator. Im getting a bit sick and tired of all you politically minded people making false accusations, when you have never attended the meetings regularly twice a week, nor dug in to find the truth of what is really going on in Davis County. Maybe when you lose your homes, because you cant pay the high taxes, you will learn. For many years these auditors made the same suggestions for more effective control of the taxpayers money. Yet, year after year, those suggestions have been ignored. Is that efficiency?
