Show Competition, recreation and fitness Wednesday December 17, 1986 oysls a own SCOTT MONSEN Review Correspondent ROY The Roy Royals continued their successful march through the young high school basketball 6 season with an impressive win over the Skyline Eagles here last Friday night. However, although the Royals '; maintained a six- - to lead through most of the second half, they almost let the game get away in the final seconds. Leading by eight, with just two minutes left to play, Roy turned cold from the the free throw line and the Eagles connected on a couple of three-poiattempts to pull to within one point. lead and We had the eight-poiwe tried to sit on the ball, said Roy head coach Ted Smith. We missed some free throws and they (Skyline) came down and s. hit a couple of baskets and We just didnt do a good job of spreading the court. We were fortunate to win, because Skyline is a good team. In addition the Royals defense looked impressive at times. The Eagles could only manage four points in the second quarter and just eight points in the third, allowing Roy to take some control of the contest. We had some lapses late in the game when we let them get some shots off from outside, but we did a pretty good job defensively. Skyline has some pretty good size and we did a good job of containing them inside " Smith said. Offensively, Roys Craig Miles put on a fine shooting display, accounting for just over half of the Royals points. Miles splashed in 24 points including one from beyond the home run stripe. He was the only Roy player to hit doublefigure sconng. Half way through the schedule the Royals sport a fine 1 record and seem to be right on track in preparations for league play that begins in January. But Smith noted that a good record now wont have much meaning without a respectable region show47-4- eight-point- nt nt three-pointer- 57 With the game on the line in the fourth quarter, the Davis Darts patiently worked, found an opening, jammed the ball inside, and scored there consistently to come away with a 7 win in Og72-6- den. pear there was no defense played. Not true. The Darts, tough defensively as always, picked up the tempo against the - Tigers. Davis got up to a small lead, at the end of the first quarter and 2 at the half. The Darts stretched the lead to seven after the third quarter and got up by 1, threatening to put the game away early in the fourth period. However, the Tigers came roaring back and made it a close contest down by just three midway through the fourth. 20-1- 6 The Darts sent the Tigers away licking their wounds at 6 on the season, despite playing their best game of the year. They (Ogden) really played well, said Davis coach John Robison, They said after the game that was the best they had played. And we played 0-- very well, too. With a score up in the 70s it may ap 37-3- 1 But thats when the Darts began to work for better shots inside. We became more patient after they got back to within three, Robison said. We worked the ball around and got it inside on them, Robison said. Along with a patient offense the Darts used an impatient defense. Davis, which played eight and nine deep as it has all year, used the depth to its advantage with a pressure n defense the entire game. And that defense hurt Odgen in the late going, forcing crucial turnovers. We kept battling back and hanging man-to-ma- with them, said Ogden coach Milt Wilcox, but a couple of bad breaks hurt us. But hot shooting by the Scots put them ahead early, forcing Clearfield out of a specialized defense, and from then on it was all Miller time. Miller led the Scots to a wm. 90-6- 8 some of the things they normally try to do. If we could do that and keep the game close, we hoped we could rattle them enough to win, Hansen said. We wanted keep the ball away from Miller and force the rest of the team to play us four on four, Hansen said. Unfortunately the rest of the Scots hit their shots early, includin the ing three first quarter. It was just one of those nights for Ben Lomond. They shot 70 percent for the night, and it wasnt against sloppy defense. The Falcons played their usual scrappy game. We got some good pressure on them most of the night. When they handled the pressure they got some easier shots, but I was pleased with the way our kids played. The Scots'just played super, Hansen said. Even though we didnt win I am still not disappointed with our team. I thought we did some things very well. We especially didnt give up. Even late in the fourth quarter we never stopped hustling and theres a lot to be said for that." three-pointe- rs Not that the Scots dont have some other fine players. It was those other players who forced Clearfield out of its diamond-and-on- e defense (four players zone with the fifth playing a trailing Miller everywhere he went), which opened the game up for the senior star. I thought Kurt Miller played an excellent game, said Clearfield coach Craig Hansen. But they have some very good players besides him.
