by Garth Carter Information and Education In southern Utah if you want a couple of large rainbow trout Piute Reservoir is a good bet Recently the Division of Wildlife Resources conducted their annual gillnetting program This program provides important data to base the fisheries management program on The results were good but could be even better A high percentage of the rainbow 12 trout taken ranged in size from lbs while a few larger and a few smaller fish were also caught The growth potential of fish in Piute Reservoir is tremendous but because the reservoir also harbors a large population of Utah chubs and Utah suckers the trout growth is below its potential Even with the slower growth rate Piute Reservoir stills allows the trout BLM species growth patterns that fisheries managers dream about In addition to the trout in 1986 and 1987 the DWR planted smallmoulh bass into the Piute Reservoir Fisheries manager Dale Hcpworth reports that the bass are doing well and mostly found near the dam The smallmoulh bass are on a only" program for the present time Biologists are predicting that in 1991 the smallmoulh in full swing be should bass program Hcpworth expects the fishing outlook for Piute Reservoir to be good but do not expect to always catch your limit on every outing Fishing will be best of the prior to the summer reservoir and can be equally rewarding from the shore as from the boat Biologists are expecting low water levels in the reservoir again this year as a result of the drought session of even a single eagle feather may be cited into court Bald eagles are normally winter residents in Millard County flying north to Alaska and Canada to breed in the summer Motorists often find birds of prey that have been killed by passing vehicles as the birds have been feeding on animals Many individuals would like to have these dead birds mounted for their personal use however this practice is not permitted by federal law Schools and museums may have birds mounted but only under very strict regulations More information concerning eagles and other birds of prey may be obtained from any office of the Division of Wildlife Resources tennis team
