Show II Page 4 Millard Countv Chronicle Progress May 10 199Q letter to parents notes disaster preparedness efforts PTA (Editor’s note: The following is the letter PTSA officers planned to send to Fillmore Middle School parents this week concerning the mock disaster) May 2 1990 Dear Parents As you remember at the night in October we announced that we would be having a disaster drill this year to see how prepared we were if an actual disaster were to happen We had our disaster drill on Monday April 30 1990 and were pleased overall with the quick response of the firemen ambulance team jeep posse and National Guard We also greatly appreciated the cooperation of die Fillmore hospital and those who work there This drill served a double purpose because the hospital must have two disaster drills a year to remain accredited We found our weak areas and have quite a few things all departments have to work on but at least we know now what we must do to be better prepared The PTSA has a telephone tree we are developing which would enable all parents to be notified in the event of an actual disaster or if children must be evacuated out of the schools for any reason We used the disaster telephone tree which involved volunteers in this disaster and it functioned wclL We are also sending home a packet that each family can use for their own emergency preparedness We hope you will discuss with your student things to do in a disaster to ensure their safety and The other people involved in helping in any emergency are all working on then areas of weakness so they will be better prepared in the future We are fortunate in this area that nothing has happened yet that would endanger our children or communities but we are in a strategic area for the possibility of any of a number of disasters We hope you will prepare as families to face that possibility as it is very real Sincerely Fillmore Middle School PTSA Joyce Dearden President Arlene Bartholomew Sharon Blad Cindy Iverson Ranae Williams Cindy Turner MOCK continued In addition to emergency responders Fillmore citizens also uninformed about the drill were tested Many were angry “We’ve had some negative feedback from the community" Phillips said “Some people were really upset that we didn’t let them know ahead of time We expected a little of that “If everybody would take a deep breath and stand back and look at it it’s a pretty good exercise for everybody Even for those parents who were scared to death and thought it w as the real thing it was good for them to sit down and really evaluate how they acted what Three ambulances at once stood at the Fillmore entrance keeping doctors and nurses hopping Hospital emergency they did” Phillips later said he w as questioned about the liability the exercise itself He checked with an could produce attorney “The area of real liability is in the failure to train and prepare" he discovered Starley and White held critiques with students Agencies conducted their own evaluations A critique in which the public was involved was held at the school Wednesday May 2 About 60 people attended the critique Various agency heads reported and discussed problems uncovered ways to fix them Problems included understaffing in many agencies communication snags between agencies and with the general public ambulance coordination perimeter control equipment shortages in some agencies and others all of which arc being addressed Joyce Dearden school PTA president said a letter would be sent home to parents the following week A packet with suggested family emergency preparedness measures will also be sent home to parents The packet lists exactly what a parent should do in the event of chemical spill power outage storm civil disturbance earthquake fire flood “nuclear problem” or bomb threat “This will be available to each teacher and will go in their kit in their classroom” Dearden said “Hopefully we can get enough funds for each child to have at their desk just a evacuation small emergency pack which will have in it the information card a water pouch emergency blanket a warm pack and a rain poncho” Dearden said Despite the “glitches" Phillips said he believed the exercise went well L Alumni Banquet WITH OUR CENTREX SYSTEM YOU CAN TURN YOUR PHONE INTO A WORK FORCE Students faculty staff and even some alumni were honored Friday evening at the annual Rebel Awards Night in the Fine Arts Center Theatre Tom Bock master of ceremonies kept the audience alive and the programmed activities runUtah radio ning smoothly A Bock added class to the personality awards evening with his smooth narration and witty Each year the Achievement of the Perfect Qift Delta Floral FTD Spring Garden Bouquet Specials on Ceramic Bud Vases Plants and Gift Items!
