Show Pace ( Millard County Chronicle 2 Progress Mav COMMENTS IQ & 199Q by Sue Bits of this and that Dear Editor Sylvester the no longer missing Chronicle cat foreground and sister Tweety who has not welcomed him with open paws Sylvester’s Back Apparently it pays to put items in the Chronicle if you want to get the word out After the paper came out a week ago with our message to Sylvester that it was time to come home we received much comment but no cat Then last Tuesday night we finished up the paper and left for the night When I was almost home at the Hinckley Conoco to be ex act I remembered I had not done all I should have and returned to the office Tweety was noticeably agitated and I could hear a cat yowling but it wasn't her I followed the sound to the ceiling and thought it was in the old air conditioning vent I teetered on a chair wondering if I was going to end up with a 2nd broken arm because of a cat I finally called Julie who brought her ladder and sbe coaxed Sylvester out of the vent He had lost a little weight and had an owie which required a Drip to Dr Nielsen and has enjoyed being fussed over since his return His sister however is of a different mind She was not happy to see him and expresses her displeasure at every opportunity And I told Sylvester if he had been a subscriber he would have received his paper in a timely fashion and would have known we wanted him back much sooner As it was he had to wait for someone to throw out a paper before he saw the notice So Sylvester is back hopefully wiser Fillmore Area Delta Area H Kit'd If! tin I t I i Bs j Jat T Roger Preclp Preclp 05 05 Preclp for April was 192 average COMMUNITY CALENDAR Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore & Delta weekdays Millard County Assessor’s Office 2nd Thursday of Month Great Basin Historical Society meeting 7:30 pm Museum open every day pm except Sunday Every Thursday TOPS meets at Della Middle School dining room 5 pm 10 am Wednesdays Story Hour Delta City Library Wednesdays pm English class for Spanish speaking people Delta City Library 16 18 April May AgriLong Term Agreement cultural Conservation Program 7 8 April 23 24 30 May The Millard County Chronicle Progress USPS Published 0 at Della every Thursday Utah 84624 by DuWiI Publishing at 40 N 300 W Located Publisher Susan - Delta Utah Editor B Duuon Editorial Ken Rand Reporter Advertising Goeru Julie Ward Design Sales & Accounts Rec Riiey Wood - hales Rita Robinson Mallet Evelyn Fillmore Office Manager Circulation Julie Ward Goerta CirculauonComp - CirculauonProduction Rita Robinson Commercial Printing Shellie Duuon Subscriptions in Advance In County - S2000 per year $1300 per 6 months Out of County - $2500 per year Single Copy - 50 cents Send Address POSTMASTERto changes PO Box 249 Delta Utah 84624 Rales Advertising Second on Request Paid at Delta Postage Utah 84624 or 864 2214 Delta: Fillmore: DUWTL 74 PUBLISHING OWNED SUSAN WILLIAM COMPANY BY B DUTSON k V WILSON ) Hunter Education course Delta Middle School Delta pm Sheriff April May 3 31 Exhibit Leavitt ChrisPainting tensen's oil paintings with two by son Steven Openhouse May 4 pm Fillmore Library Multipurpose Room May 10 MHS Band and Choir spring concert 8 pm MHS auditorium Great Basin Historical Society meeting 7:30 pm Delta City Building “Billy Van" League of Utah Writers 6:30 pm Delta Library May 12 Millard Academy - Hinckley High School Alumni Banquet and Dance 7 pm Sutherland LDS Cultural HalL Karen Riding and Mike Malin wedding reception 7 - 9 pm Delta lst2nd Church 222 West 200 North Marianne Crosland and John Atwood wedding reception Pahvant Senior Center 55 South 400 West Fillmore May 13 Delta Seminary Graduation 8 pm Delta Stake Center May 15 Food Handlers Class Delta Public Health 2:30 (S5 fee) DHS Arts Festival and Chuck Wagon Dinner DHS Art Gallery and Tennis Courts pm Band Concert 7 pm auditorium May 16 Weed Control Day Cove Fort May 18 "Diabetes and Stress" 10 am Delta Med Center 3 pm Community Fillmore Community Center Deadline for A CP signup Millard County Republican Party Convention 6 pm Pahvant Senior Citi55 South 400 West zen Building Fillmore May 19 Pink Day Fillmore City Park May 22 Immunization Ginic Delta Public Health am & pm May 24 Cholesterol Screening Delta Public Health pm forappt American Legion Service Officer Fillmore Job Service 6 June Blood Pressure Ginic Delta Public Health 1:30 am A pm June 9 Endurance Ride Base Camp Fillmore Rodeo Grounds Hinckley Rodeo Queen Competition June 15 ASCS deadline to report crops 23 Miss Hinckley pageant June I’ve got a few hints timely or otherwise to pas on to your female readers Male readers go to the sports page! Does your family just love carrot cake and you just hate to make it because of grating all those required carrots? You may like to know that can be overcome I buy a bag of carrots scrub them well (I do not believe in peeling) haul out my old food chopper (purchased from D Stevens Co about 20 years ago) fait on the smallest blade attach the thing to my cupboard and flat get with it I measure the correct amount required for each cake slap the mess in a baggie zip it up and throw the whole thing into the freezer You'D get enough carrots for 7 or 8 double recipes I don’t even think about making a cake the day I do that grinding That’s enough work for one day Anyway they’ll (carrots) keep for 6 to 8 months Remember that expensive perfumed bath powder given to you for Christmas? Or w as it for Mother’s Day ? You were so generous with it when you first opened the box Great poufs of powder dust drifted all over die bathroom And the first thing you know the powder is gone and the matching perfume bottle is half full Well stretch that powder out by mixing it well with plain old cornstarch Equal amounts Works like a charm Isn't that a feeling of luxury? Freshly bathed matching perfume and powder? I love that feeling Now what are you going to do with all those radishes when the family tires of radishes in a green salad? Chop the tops finely and add to your salad greens Gives added color different texture and a zesty taste And the radishes themfour cups t selves should be Cover and boil gently until about 5 to 7 minutes Add a bit of vinegar to your boiling water and the radishes will retain their bright color Now drain those babies and reserve a cup of the liquid Make a white sauce of 2 tbsp of butter 2 tbsp flour teaspoon salt and dash of pepper the liquid and 12 cup half & half smother radishes with sauce serve with pride? Why not? Have you ever tried alfalfa in your green salad? I’m not talking alfalfa sprouts from the grocery store I'm talking hay It's good and adds sparkle to your conversation! That's all the hints today but I do want to talk about my husband one Robert M Moody He can be so funny to me— much like his good buddy Boyd Bunker Neither can seem to understand why their words provoke laughter for they tend to appear so innocent! Moody had to make a telephone call recently to Boston Thankfully it w as an 800 number When he and the other party were through with their business he begins to tell her he was once stationed in Boston during the big war I began smiling then because I could just imagine what was going on in that young girl's mind “So Big deal" Then he inquires about the weather there and relates weather conditions here I'm smiling out loud by now Oh and then I heard him say “It's been so cold here AD my cherries froze and turned black Yeah and my wife's sewing machine won’t work and our chickens have quit laying eggs" By now I’m picking myself up off the floor I'm laughing that hard It’s true about the cherries They did freeze-six of them My sewing machine works when I want it to work and we ain’t got no chickens! When I finally get myself under control enough to talk I asked him why did he tell that lady all that stuff His answer is classic I think: “Well you know BSing is an important part of life" I'm still laughing Isn't life in West Millard County about as good as it can get? Thanks Sarah Inez Moody Fire danger warning Dear Editor: Utah is at 68 percent of normal precipitation compared to 78 percent last year at this time The southern pan of the State is experiencing either extreme or severe drought conditions with the remainder of the State being in a moderate drought situation The potential for an active fire season in Utah is very high this areas that have not year burned before are targets for fast moving high intensity fires The areas where Utah traditionally has a lot of large wild fires will lack the flash fuels this year to make them a fire threat The fires Utah will experience will probably last longer and be harder to control As a partner in the national interagency effort to fight wildfires I encour- - age everyone to be especially careful on the public lands this year One careless act with fire can cause millions of dollars in damage and destroy important natural resources In addition the increase in residential areas being built next to wildlands raises new threats from wildfires to dwellings and local residents While some fires are inevitable and some are even helpful let’s not increase the chances of wildfires on the public lands Special precautions can be uiken to protect your home in rural areas and when you visit public lands Contact your local Bureau of Land Management office to find out more about wildfire safety Have a safe and happy spring and summer Cy Jamison Director Bureau of Land Management Thanks for help Dear Fiditor There is a lot of talk in the stale about businesses cooperating with schools in Once helping to provide technology again I found out that small rural schools can benefit from this type of cooperation This week I needed a conference telephone for a project I was doing with my AP English class so I called Allen W ardle at Contel I wxs very grateful for his response Within a couple of hours he and members of his crew were at school to assess the situation At the end of the day the conference phone was installed and my class was set to “talk with an expert" Too many times kindnesses go without proper thanksbut the genial attitude and service of Contel was truly appreciated My students had a little better taste of a college setting without leaving town While I'm at it I’ll thank Vance for coming to a couple of classes to talk about Oak City His stories are great All my students agreed Sincere thanks Jane Beckwith and Delta High students Letters must be signed Dear Readers Letters to the Editor must be signed in order to be published Editor “Blessed is the man who having nothing to say abstains from giving in words evidence of the fact” - Again?) she said Sure I have zillions of ideas I said I just can’t figure out which one to use Meow (Does the term ‘clueless wonder give you any ideas?) she said I hadn’t a clue as to what she was talking about But I did come up with an idea for this column Today’s column is about where ideas come from Have you ever wondered? I asked some of my fictional friends (my real one would not return my calls) where they get their ideas Here is what they said: I get my best Informed Sourcerer: ideas out of cereal boxea Try taking a nap after downing a box of Sugar Com Bombs and Lake notes about the interesting dreams you have Agent Orange was invented this way The Idea Fairy Prof Mediocrity: brings them His ensemble features flattering lavender tights with a matching no wait Strike sequin ed that He dresses really macho okay? Not like that whimp the Tooth Fairy No sir When you go to sleep at night leave a note on your dresser telling the Idea Fairy what idea you'd like to have in the morning He will leave it under your pillow Unless it’s a really stupid idea Then you’re on your own I use only federal Censorman: ideas which have been approved by the federal government Some people would call this a I idea dumb disagree respectfully But I will defend to the death your right to call my ideas dumb Ideas grow on trees Anxletyman: like turnips cauliflower and broccoli You can eat most ideas raw but some have to be killed and boiled first Some ideas are wormy Little Nell: I lie here all day tied to the railroad tracks y’know and I get these like totally gnarly ideas y’know I mean I figure like what would it be like if a train did come y’know? Cato the Wonder Kitty: I get my best ideas while napping We may have the Reagan administration We have no trouble The Editor: finding out where to go to look for ideas Our readers are always telling us where to go The Hunchback of BYU: It's okay for dumb people to have ideas because this is America Smart people can have ideas too but I don’t have to listen to them if I don’t want to I think having an education helps you have better ideas but an education isn’t really important if you're going into pro ball The Brothers Din Gungha and Rubba: They get some pretty good ideas on Madison Avenue Like the Archies Earnest movies licorice ice cream lite beer car telephones pork rinds bumpcrstickers squeezably soft cereal and lemony scented dish soap And soon A reader once asked where I got ideas for this column and how could he send them back I figure if ideas were a dime a dozen somebody would be making a fortune selling them for attic insulation They’re I believe cheaper than that You see ideas exist all around us like in some kind of cosmic smog All you have to do is pluck them out the same way you’d Mom'a pluck chicken bones out of your best meatloaf The idea as first upthunked by Carl Gustav Jung who was cither President of Italy in April 1931 or a psychologist I forget which Anyway Carl called it “the Cosmic U nconscious" after a rock group popular at the time Carl’s idea was that in certain stages of unconsciousness you could tune into these cosmic vibes like you were listening to the Larry King Show The approin deep priate stages can be manifest sleep drunken stupor while watching TV news voting Republican or littering A tree falling in the woods makes no sound unless it falls on somebody’s RV right? Well ideas are the same They exist as a "potential" like electricity or Sylvester Stallone's acting talent It ain’t an idea until you have it Get it? The idea gives rise to the thought that there are no new ideas Which prompts me to join both my readers in wondering where from do I plagiarize this stuff Carl’s idea prompted folk singer Dylan Thomas (or was it John Dillinger?) to sing "I wouldn't worry about it none Those ideas are only in your head" or some such hippie claptrap Figure me this: If we all get ideas from the same source this cosmic idea soup how is it that when Pentagon weapons designers get an idea it turns instantly stupid and costs 10 times as much? And the keep doing it Go figure Proof that ideas appear spontaneously in different places is manifest in the blossoming (if that’s the right word) of Mexican restaurants all over the US There is Taco John’s Taco Bell Taco Time Taco Maker Taco the Town and Tacky Taco Or figure this: me and millions of Spanish and South Americans all get the same idea at about noon each day This is how the siesta was invented Carl's cosmic soup is the only way to explain this phenomena unless you want to factor in mass indigestion I get a lot of my ideas while driving For ex ample last weekend while driving I got this wild and crazy idea for something I call a "turn signaL" Drivers can use it to tell other drivers when they intend to turn I'm sure this is an original idea because I've rever seen one used in Utah And I just now got this really neato idea: I'm going to take a nap Just in time too: the column's over Domestic violence Part 9: Battered women and the legal system by Marie L Godfrey PhD The battered woman who finally deckles it’s time to call for help may be in for a big surprise She is more likely to end up in jail than he is The problem starts with a reluctance to respond to domestic disputes Law officers have reason to fights are tough calls they can be deadly Maybe this is why wives hear indifference or disbelief or why response is slow or nonexistent When a woman enters her home some of her rights are immediately suspended Society seems to feel that the right of privacy in the home is more important than a black eye or broken nose Once police arrive they may have trouble deciding how to react Laws specifically relating to domestic abuse are rare When they exist they are often In subject to different interpretations Utah for example a Spouse Abuse act was passed in 1983 With this law officers in Sandy and St George are able to cite or arrest abusers when they have cause to believe that physical abuse has occurred Officers in Salt Lake City however use the same law to justify not citing or arresting the abuser unless the wife presses charges These laws have recently been clarified The battered woman often will not press charges And the officer may be leery of charges filed in strong emotional situations Most often she will drop the charges the next day And so the typical treatment for a batterer is a walk around the block If the man is removed and taken to jail he's usually free on bail within a very short time In either case the woman who finally gathered the nerve to call for help may have taken a risk she will regret Some women have found an even more difficult burden: make a mistake small or large and THEY can be rested The woman who fights back or tries to drown her fears in alcohol may find herself looking out through the bars And since she often has little money to post bail she stays in jail If she chooses to leave her home in hopes that leaving will stop the abuse and protect her children she may find herself divorced and without her children It takes a persistent woman to get a charge filed against her husband Even after she has conquered the official indifference of law enforcement she has still more obstacles to overcome Lawyers and judges are usually on the side of the husband Women are told to “go back home and try harder" If they have filed for divorce they “aren’t willing to give him another chance" If they return home the judge may say "since you went back into the same house with him that proves that the beating wasn't se- vere” So the woman who cried for help has only three options: (1) submit to another beating (2) flee her home or (3) defend herself as best she can Without help or outside intervention she may have no other choices Because the situations described here and many others too numerous to include have common patterns a woman is more likely to succeed if she contacts a crisis center women's shelter or advocacy group for assistance Besides the needed emotional support such groups offer assistance in dealing with systems which often arc unjust In addition they can help by educating law enforcement personnel judges and people in general If you see yourself or someone else in the descriptions above contact new Horizons Help is available 24 hours a day at or And if a male answers don’t hang up In Sevier County the sheriffs office swers calls when New Horizons is closed Just tell him you need help from New Horizons and give him a phone number You will be contacted right away If the situation is an emergency ask for officers AND New Horizons HELP!
