Milestones of Millard a history up tp 1952 Lions Club Delta boasts a very active Lions Club which consists of members representing the various businesses in Delta The club was first organized in June 1929 William Starley was the first president charter members over the Some of the worthy projects the club has sponsored include: the improvement of the Delta cemetery helping to sponsor the Delta Drum and Bugle California Corps’ trip to Oakland when an international convention was held there The encouraging of highway 6 completion from Santaquin to Delta the lighting of the softball field building of the town hall and the open air hall The members of the club did the actual leveling of the ground for the town hall open air hall and the baseball field They were the sponsoring agents for the Delta Municipal Airport One of their members Golden H Black then Mayor of the city was the foremost They suppromoter of the project ported the swimming pool project and have pushed the project to get highway 6 completed between Hinckley and Ely Nevada Tharol Larsen is president of the club this year Delta Junior Chamber of Commerce The Delta Jaycees organized in the fall of 1947 with Carl Ashby as the first with members (including president business men) between the ages of Some of the worthy civic projects they have sponsored include cleanfire prevention proup programs Claus grams and visit to every house in the city Each year they present a Service Award to the young man who has been outstanding in business civic and church affairs This award was made in 1948 to Eldon A Eliason in 1949 to Willard (no award was made in Stephenson 1950) and to Earl Kelly in 1951 They promoted the organization of male the “Desert Sentinels” chorus which consists of members from seven communities in the county The organization since Ashby has been headed by LeRoy Smith Reed Turner Eldon A Eliason and at present Earl Kelly is president Wildlife Federation About 1936 the old Rod and Gun Club was dissolved and the West Millard Wildlife Federation was organized to take care of and manage the fish and game in this area Glen Stewart was named the first president of this organization Getting this organization going was a difficult job but Glen Stewart was equal to the task and has worked almost a lifetime without pay to conserve and promote wildlife in this county He served as for periods running into president about twelve years or during two terms During his leadership he promoted an extra wildlife manager which most people call a game warden We now have one in Fillmore and one in Delta to take care of and properly manage our fish and game For the past twenty years Mr Stewart has been trying to get the State Fish and Game Department and the Government Wildlife Service interested in planting trout in the Sevier River from Uba Dam down to the Delta Diversion Dam Some of Mr Stewart’s work and efforts are now being repaid in good fishing in this area Other men who have served as are: presidents of the organization Layton Dewsnup of Deseret Gerald B Huff John A Day and the present Lester Welton all of Delta president At present the organization is working on the project of making a rearing pond for trout in what is known as the Moulton Springs area which is about two miles down the river from the Uba Dam This will furnish Rainbow and German Brown trout for the river The fish will also be planted in Oak City Chock Creek and Corn Canyon Creek the During the bad winter of organization carried on the project of feeding the wild birds twice a day The organization sponsors a project at Clear Lake and each spring they hold a ‘steak fry’ in Oak City Canyon (Information furnished by John A Day) Producers of Utah’s top cash crop gather in St George the production and marketing of alfalfa hay remains one of the best sources of income for A hay Utah farmers and ranchers grower himself Ashby said nearly a half million acres of alfalfa hay are harvested each year in the state producing nearly two million tons of quality forage for dairy and feedlot use throughout the West and in overseas markets such as Japan South Korea and Taiwan The total value of all hay produced in Utah is slightly over $133 million dollars The theme for this year’s conference which is a cooperative effort of Farm Bureau and Utah State University Extension is “What is Quality?” Among those schedule to address the syma hay posium are Bill Blainsburg broker from Chino California on hay marketing Dr Steve Dewey extension UniversiState weed specialist at Utah ty on weed control Dr Terry Tindall extension soils specialist at USU on improving alfalfa fertilization and Dr Phillip Rasmussen associate professor of soil sciences and biometerology at USU who will address the impact of the 1985 farm bill on Utah agriculture Also addressing the symposium will extension be Dr Sherm Thomson plant pathologist at USU and Dr Whitesides extension Ralph agronomist who will address selecting alfalfa varieties for disease control and extension dairy Charles Mickelson specialist on what dairymen want in the alfalfa they buy There will also be a hay judging contest for growers interested in seeing how their hay stacks up against that the produced by others throughout state Symposium attendees will also have an opportunity to test their skills at determining the quality of hay in a contest sponsored by Utah State University will Have you ever seen a rainbow at night?
