Show ' Page - Millard Countv 2 USPS (Comments I think I am in the middle of the winter blahs I have tons of projects started as usual but just can’t get enthused about doing any of them I have had the pool table buried for weeks under a heap of old pants that are going to become denim quilts I have drawers closets and boxes just I begging to be cleaned and sorted have a weight bench 999'set up I have a junk room that needs cleaning so I can fix it up for the grandkids play room I have curtain rods half hung and closet doors at half mast I have doors that need refinishing and cupboards and rooms that need painting - just to mention the obvious And if I wanted to stimulate my mind I could learn how to operate the computer and get setting up some programs that would help out at work But am I doing any of these things? I’m putting together jigsaw Nope puzzles and in general frittering away my time I used to say that the cold slows me down so I couldn’t get any of the household projects attended to But in the summer I have to be outside tending the weeds and I always say I’ll do the household projects in the winter when I can’t be outside So maybe I’m just getting lazy or bored or having a period of being uninspired Or maybe I think that if I get these things taken care of I won’t have anything to not do or more things will just need doing I always have favored projects that are not reruns That’s why I like to knit and such because when I am done I am done not like vacuuming cleaning Thnrs Jan - 2J 14 inn 19M drawers etc that just have to be done over and over But maybe it is just a matter of taking a break after the rush rush holiday season Maybe I’m just having a little R & R to rejuvenate my body and mind before I plunge headlong into the next project - and I should stop feeling guilty for not being productively busy every minute I’m not on any deadline (except self imposed) for any of these projects I have thought up for myself and they will all be there tomorrow or even the next day Lately I have had the lyrics to a song I remember to be a favorite of my cousin when I was a child Maybe it is a message The song’s title is I “Manana” meaning tomorrow remember one verse: it is broken and the window “The rain is coming in If someone doesn’t fix it I’ll be soaking to the skin But if we wait a day or two the rain will go away And who will need a window on such a sunny day?” (Chorus) “Manana manana manana is soon enough for me” I think my subconscious is telling me to kick back and smell the roses once in awhile and stop thinking that I should be moving the world every minute Lots of times the things I get in such a dither to get done are hardly worth the worry they wait (And if anyone has the words and music to “Manana” I would certainly be delighted to have a copy) You and Your Child: Success in School by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President Should a high school halfback who doesn’t maintain at least a “C” average lose his spot on the football team? It’s a question that goes beyond sports School boards around the nation are looking closely at academic success in all extra school activities and that means activities at school such as school plays and band orchestra clubs Some persons believe that these extracurricular activities interfere with the classroom performance of some and halfbacks Others maintain that some students attend school mainly for sports not scholarly pursuits On the other hand some argue that the requirement to maintain a VC” average to participate in sports gives some students' incentive to study that they bt'herwis might not have of Education A US Department of study showed that about sophomore and senior students were volved in extracurricular activities in 1982 The study disclosed that 88 percent of the students involved in extracurricular activities met or exceeded the “C” average requirement But only 72 percent of those not involved had 20 grade point averages or better Robert McNerney and Martin Haberman write that extra activities doublessly can hamper some students’ studying For many others though these activities are “extremely powerful motivating factors that seem to complement studies” the professors declare They say the challenge for adults is to devise policies that encourage successful student participation in both the essentials and the extras Community Calendar Beginning June 15 Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore Mon & Thurs 9 a m noon & pm Delta Wed 9 a m noon & pm Renewals any working day at Millard County Offices Jan art show at Fillmore Traveling Elementary School “Have you ever seen a rainbow at night” Jan 6 Prenatal classes begin at Fillmore Medical Center pm Call Jan 7 Pre Natal classes begin at Delta Community Medical Center 7:30 pm Jan Folk Art Exhibit Fillmore Library Jan 12 - March 26 EMT Course in Delta pm Chronicle Progress USPS mry Tkmtfsv tf Dttta UcaM Publisher Susan - Editor Carder Reporter at Large Advertising Sales S Legal Billing Riley Wood Rita Robtnton Sales Julie Ward Coertz Design Fillmore Office Manager Evelyn Mallet Receivable Deb Greathouse Accounts Circulation Juke Ward Goertz CirculationComp CirculationProduction CirculationProduction Rita Krebs Rita Robinson Commercial fO $2000 per year per 6 months SO cents Address changes to Delta Utah 14624 $1100 Send Box 249 Adverlwig Wcend CIm fotaft Fdbnorr I m at Delta ar $340 1 lillliiiiiiimM!n!MniiiiiiiiHiiiuiiiiiiuiiinilllMIIIliinillllllllllllllllilinlllllllai The Helpful neighbors appreciated Each time it snows I am reminded the fairytale “The Elves and the Shoemaker” Magically it seems the snow disappears from my sidewalk and my driveway is made safe for entrance and exiting Some of my neighbors give of their time and efforts to remove the snow around my house thus making safe passage and all is done when I am at work I am most appreciative of their kindnesses Mr Horace “Buck” Wilkins shcvels the walks all around my house and Mr Blaine Theobald cleared my driveway Another neighbor whose name I do not know stopped to help me get out of my driveway when he saw me in distress His wife patiently waited for him in the car To all of you friendly caring neighbors in Hinckley I extend my sincere thanks Dawn Carder of The fallacy of natural childbirth After returning from a beautiful home birth I got a call spontaneous to labor coach a friend of mine who was having a hospital birth She had wanted a natural childbirth but upon arrival at the hospital I could see that her desires were not being considered She was dressed in a jonnie shaved and given an enema Add to the jonnie contractions and cramps one IV Even drip and one fetalmonifor though she protested these interventions she was quickly reproved with the usual lines: “I’m worry but this is hospital policy” or “Dr’s orders” However she was assured that she would still be able to have a natural birth It seems that natural childbirth in America today has as many definitions as it has advocates For some a natural birth is one without any medication whatever For others a natural birth js one in which the mother is awake that is any birth without general anesthesia Increasingly as the cesarean rate continues to climb natural birth is becoming synonymous with vaginal birth If women accept the current definition of “natural” childbirth as birth without anesthesia then a woman can have an enema a shave an IV a fetal monitor Pitocin an episiotomy and all manner of intervention and still think that she has had a natural birth Must women accept interventive birth as natural? Is this the dream of American women who dutifully attend their childbirth preparation classes and faithfully practice their breathing exercises? Was this the same dram of in England of Platanov and Nicolaiev in Russia of Lamaze and of Chabon and Vellay in France Bradley in America? I think not uncut birthing Are unmedicated women becoming extinct in America? If tve assume a 25 percent cesarean rate and a percent episiotomy rate then less than 8 percent of birthing women avoid being cut in some way during delivery Pure natural birth is birth that is completely free of medical intervention It precludes management and It is manipulation by others and Natural birth has no rules only suggestions Anything that makes the laboring woman more comfortable is acceptable as long as it is Some women choose to nonmedical walk through early labor others prefer to sit or rock Some women like lots and of support friendly faces while others want to be left alone with their thoughts and not be touched at all The important thing to remember is that one must be flexible Each woman must be free to labor in her own way uninhibited and undisturbed There is no breathing no position no method of relaxation that is right for every woman at every “stage” It is a woman’s right to birth naturally with dignity and love Why do women have to fight for that? Many ercise walkers use jogging shoes others use “strict” walking shoes or combinations of both There are a number of (1) 1 987 important characteristics that are important in a good walking shoe: toe a) properly fitted toe section-tshould section be rounded not pointed b) well padded cushioned heel-- to help absorb shock c) proper arch support-- to help prevent stress to the midfoot (especially important for those with flat feet) d) heel counter (addition)-- to prevent excessive turning out of the foot (pronation) or excessive turning in of the foot (supination) e) flesible forefoot-- to allow proper motion shoes 0 for a reason and are uncomfortable discomfort should alert the walker that something is wrong A marked increase in the sale of walking shoes is primarily due to the large number of women taking an terest in exercise nearly 65 percent of all new participants in sporting activities are females 3CxcnT4JMtA An easy way to ice cupcakes is to place a small piece of chocolate on the top when the cupcake is still hot and spread the chocolate as it melts Researchers are currently redesigning the standard male shoe in order to create a shoe specifically for women Wider hip structure in women results in an increased tendency toward feet which may lead to knee pain Greater flexibility of the ankle may cause stress to the lateral aspect of the forefoot resulting in more supination than in men Different athletic activities have shoe requirements special Shop carefully and ask questions when you purchase your next pair of shoes Should you have a question for MEDLINE SPORTS write Dr Stephen Henry 1361 Tyler Park Drive Louisville Kentucky 40204 r 1 A7 Lobof COOL BUY5 intheclaiiifiecb V '£Vt £ ft Z !& Kf T frfi£i T 11372- 1 -1 TEL (082) 282— 531J £ ft £ H k 2 Hi T § (2 PTA£?R£H£ fJ( Delta Public am Rugm & t TEL -rn m 9 st £ ?i $ (082) 823— 4466 pm I v" Clinic § kind enough to give me a ride home in cold weather Tillie Cisneros I would like to thank Stan Robison for removing the snow by Delta South Elementary and to those who have been Delta Little League wrestling weigh-iand registration 6 pm DHS Gym Jan 26 Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia Delta High School Auditorium 7 pm Tickets $2 & S3 at the door Soil Tester Recertification Review Delta Public Health Office 2 pm Feb 2 Blood Pressure Clinic Delta Public Health Office am & Copy Single POSTMASTER: pm Jan 16 John and Katie Peterson celebrating 90th and 89th birthdays M E Bird Center 3:30-- pm Jan 17 Elder Robert “Rob” Gerald Wright mission farewell 10:00 am Leam- Thanks expressed to kind people I by Postmaster Tom Hamilton EDITOR pm In County Sit 00 per year In County SI0 00 per 6 months Out of County Out of County 15 Fillmore Middle School Reflections class deadline Doreen Nielson and Rob Kelsey wedOak City Ward ding reception Postmarks pm In Advance Subscriptions ' pm Jan Jan 25 Immunization Health Office Printing Dutton Shellie Millard Historical Society Leamington City Building 7 pm Editorial Dawn pm West meeting Jan 22 Darnee Dutson and Chris Neimann wedding reception Oak City Cultural Hall pm DHS swim team hosts meet 3 pm West Millard Community Swimming Pool Penny Giles and Kim Scott Jones wedding open house Delta 4th5th Ward pm Jan 23 DHS Senior Ball IPP Man Camp 9 12:30 am pm Jan 24 Sister Stephanie Smith mission report Sutherland 2nd Ward 12:30 Dutton 8 Tuesdays Saturdays Center 14 Field Service Officer for Veterans of Foreign Wars at Delta Job Service Jan ington Ward Chapel Jan 18 - 25 March of Dimes Mothers’ March on Birth Defects Jan 20 Food Handlers class Fillmore Public Health office 2:30 pm (S5) Soil Tester Recertification Review Fillmore Public Health office 3:30 Millard County The Vocational nninnuininnninnininnin nnnunnnnni TO THE uc ji nnnnnnnun i: Feb 5 & 6 Delta hosts state 2A championship DHS gym wrestling tournament Cr — I 1 "V |
