The two are Losee Lumber and V & S Variety Store both owned and operated by Mark Cecil and Gary Losee both offering variety and true values The story behind the two businesses is an interesting one Both Mark and Gary Losee were bom and raised in Delta Gary after high school graduation went off to Southern Utah State College where he studied for one year At the completion of the year he headed off to the east where he served a two year LDS mission in Kentucky Tennessee and West Virginia Back in Ltah Gary returned to college this time to Utah State where he majored in music At one time he had plans to work for a recording company after earning his degree but found little opportunity in Utah For two years after college he lived in Springville and worked as a truck driver for PBI Meanwhile younger brother Mark finished Delta High School spent a year at Utah State and served an LDS mission in the state of Washington He opted to return home rather than to college after the mission Once back he began working as a contractor Then Gary came home and the two for Bent Mork worked brothers building houses Eventually Bent urged them to “go it alone” at which time Gary and Mark started their own cabinet business The year was 1975 were good The Losee brothers cabinet makers and they had plenty of work to keep them busy The cabinets they made were works of and built to last Cabinet making requires long hours for craftsmen who are perfectionist The monetary returns rarely compensate for the materials and the time spent After assessing the situation and determining that they needed a place where their kids could work Gary and Mark involved their dad Cecil and headed off on a new venture s team got together in The the lumber business in 1975 when they the old Dee’s Supply purchased Lumber Yard In that spot with a store of only 1600 square feet they remained for approximately five years The business according to Gary was 90 percent with local contractors who were busy at that time Gradually the contracting business slowed down consequently the contractors could no longer support Losee Lumber There just was no future in contracting With this fact staring them in the faces the Losee men branched out once again In 1980 they bought property on North Highway 6 and set to work planning The summer of 1981 marked the beginning of building in the new location There were some complications along the way but the Losees stuck The new Losee with the project Lumber was opened for business in September 1982 The lumber store is an impressive building Its design created by Mark and Gary allows for future additions and includes a unique and most effective solar heating system There are 6600 square feet of selling space filled with 14000 items of hardware automotive supplies paints carpeting and complete electrical and plumbing One year ago the Losees departments bought Radio Shack from Pat and Gil Trujillo thus adding another line of wares to their customers Losee Lumber is a True Value hardware store By affiliating with the national organization the Losees are able and directly to the child’s capacity to receive meaning through images and to Southern Utah Division Director Jean Hatch “A mother needs to realize she is eating for two during her pregnancy If she eats poorly so does her baby” said Hatch “That also means if a mother eats well her baby is given a better start at life” Hatch added mothers should also be aware of proper weight gain what foods to eat and which to avoid and how much water to drink among other things “The recommended weight gain is about 25 pounds during an entire pregnancy” said Hatch “You should never try to lose weight during a pregnancy if you have questions about the amount of weight you are gaining consult with your doctor” Within a week after delivery you will lose about 12 to 14 pounds With proper eating and moderate exercise the rest of your weight gain will probably be gone within three to six months after delivery according to Hatch “You should aim for about three meals a day making sure the foods you eat contain all the nutrients you need Snacks should consist of foods suc4i as cheese fruit and vegetables that will help supply you with good nutrition Avoid snacking too much on candy pastries or sweet drinks which contain relatively few nutrients compared to calories” According to Hatch an expectant mother should drink several glasses of water each day to help the body use the nutrients it is taking in and get rid of the waste products produced by both the mother and baby Water also helps regulate body temperature “The first step in a healthy delivery is to seek professional medical advise and then continue on in wise health practices throughout pregnancy” Hatch said For a free brochure on nutrition during pregnancy including a sample menu for expectant mothers call the March of Dimes Southern Utah Division Office at USPS My Forty Year Love Affair by outreach is increasing the “effecorganizations tiveness and efficiency” of local government statewide says a U of U dean “That’s especially important in fiscally uncertain times” says Dr Howard Ball dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science which includes the CPAA It makes sense for such an operation to be headquartered at the U of U and in Salt Lake City adds Dr F Ted Hebert CPAA director who reports to Ball “We’re the major state university in the state’s largest city which is also the capitol city” says Hebert “This puts us in touch with state government and with government associations such as the Utah Association of Counties and Utah League of Cities and Towns These contacts link us with county and city governments statewide” Citizens and community leaders throughout the state are familiar with the CPAA’s training courses in city planning and with institutes it states such as the Clerks and Recorders Institute County Officials Institute and Utah Mayors Institute the center does much Actually more Increasingly the operation is being recognized as one of the top quality public affairs centers in the nation Generally its activities fall into three areas: Education The center directs three public administration education undergraduate certificate which can be earned along with bachelor’s degrees in other fields a certificate for graduate students who want more training in or who see the public administration programs-- certificate along with a graduate degree in another field and the master’s of public administration degree The U is the only state institution offering the MPA so it is a training ground for people who become city managers budget officials and government administrators throughout Utah Research The CPAA is the home for the Survey Research Center a opinion research operation Unlike polling companies it does no market research or candidate polling Rather it seeks formation about Utahns’ health financial status family satisfaction and so forth It sometimes seeks citizen opinion on public policies such as whether Utah should bid for the Winter Olympics Many Utahns have received a call from a survey center interviewer For one by the Utah Health Department-abo- ut 6000 Utah households were contacted Results of different surveys have been provided to legislators special state committees health regional a local mental health departments agency and other public organizations w hich use them to make decisions most benefiting the public Technical Assistance This is the activity that most directly touches communities throughout the state In the first place the center is a source of help and advice as close as local officials’ telephones They call with questions about budgets planning ordinances and personnel matters "I’ve needed assistance at various times and telephoned the center” says Dorothy Jeffery Delta City Recorder “If they didn’t have an answer they told me immediately who did” Much of the center’s technical work relates to public assistance finance It collects and publishes data on city and county tax collections and spending This enables county commissioners and town council members to compare their budgets with those of governments Another major focus is community planning The CPAA has prepared 15 class sessions on topics such as zoning law using census data in community analysis and capital im provements planning The programs increase citizen planning commissioners’ of planning knowledge principles The center’s beginings go back more than 40 years when the Institute of Government was established to offer a certificate in public administration In the late 1950s the Bureau of Community Development was established For years it was headed by Richard state legislator and Lindsay now public communication director for the Church of Jesus Christ of Saints In 1979 the institute and bureau were merged to form the CPAA Besides helping governments to be more efficient and effective the CPAA seeks to model efficiency in its own Funds for its research and operations technical assistance come largely from grants contract and other education funds Some funding is from mineral lease fees paid by companies extracting oil and minerals on federal lands Under federal law a share of lease fees are to the state The Utah passed Legislature has appropriated some of this state share to the University “With mineral lease money we seek to provide some special services to the Uintah Basin and other areas that are particularly affected by mineral activity” says Hebert
