Show For female students, decorating seems to be all about creativity and style. Choosing a proper color scheme, being organized and adding personal touches fully complete a perfect bachelorette pad. BYABRIE LUNT Staff Writer When college students decorate their space, its all about which sex he or she is: Girls use inspiration such as Pinterest, whereas most guys buy the first thing they see at Walmart. Guys and girls have different views on decorating, and they definitely exercise their beliefs in various ways. For girls, its all about femininity, color schemes and organization, and thats why they take the time to decorate. Sundi Mills, a junior early childhood education major from Malad, Idaho, explains why decorating is so important to girls. Decorating your dorm apartment gives you excitement about where you live and helps you come home to a positive, relaxing environment (rather) than coming home to an empty, plain dorm apartment, she said. In contrast, girls view guys decorating abilities as pretty much sub par. Jennifer Washburn, a sophomore psychology major from Orem, agrees. Guys dont take the time to decorate, she said. The only additional things they ever put an effort in are TVs and entertainment centers, so I think that a lot of the time guys apartments are pretty basic and plain. Even though guys dont put as much of an effort into decorating as girls, that doesnt mean girls should stop decorating. We should embrace our decorating abilities. So for girls to have a well-decorat- space, they BY AMANDA JACOBS Staff Writer That U at the beginning of Utah just might stand for our unique sense of language. When it comes to slang, does Utah have certain phrases or words that its residents seem to say over and over? Dixie State students and staff members weigh in on the debate on our great state and the lingo you need first need to establish a color scheme. For Washburn, this is light green and turquoise, but any bright colors will do the trick. Stick to colors that are uplifting and bright and happy because that creates a feeling of happiness, and it helps you stay upbeat and uplifted instead of the drab black or grays, she said. When youre in school you want to have a place thats comfortable and happy, so if you have happy colors, then it will be good for you. Mills said the color scheme affects the balance of the space. When you buy things, make sure they go with other things you have in your room, she said. Pick a color scheme and stick to that color scheme because mismatched furniture is ugly. And one tip to remember is that you can always your furniture. If you buy all black furniture and then decide you want nt brighter colors, painting each piece of furniture a different color will transform your space completely. After youve chosen your color scheme, go shopping for the things you cant five without. Some essential pieces in the room include mirrors, pictures, bedspreads and nightstands. And when you buy these things, make sure you know exactly where theyll be placed in your room. Because if you have all your furniture against one wall and all your picture frames and posters on the other, it can appear unbalanced. So plan ahead when you go full-bod- y shopping. An important part in deco to know to become an official Utahn. Director of Admissions Laralee Davenport said since she was bom and raised a Utah girl, it was a little harder for her to think of the different phrases the state is known for. Well, up until she got married anyway. My husband is from California, and he likes to point out some of the things hes never heard before, rating is organization, and Mills said this is crucial. Organization is key, she said. When you five in a small apartment, if you dont have organization accessories, your room can very easily look cluttered and crowded. You can organize your room with anything from closet organizers to bins under your bed to a bookcase. It will really make your room appear bigger, especially if your methods of organization are hidden. In the final step, girls add style to their space. This can be through projects, artwork, pictures or unique elements. If youre the artsy type, put up pictures of you and your friends on your walls, or maybe posters of your favorite band. Or if youre really into photography, you can create a collage of your favorite photos. If youre the HGTV-lov-in- g type, make your space your own design project. Look for unique ideas that will really make your room pop like making your own headboard or reupholstering the chair at your desk. Mills recommended investing in curtains. She has some in front of her closet so she can hide the clutter. She also said to look for inspiration for cheap DIY projects on Pinterest. Washburn said to stay on the cheaper side for your room by digging to find things at thrift stores. You can find that antique night-stan- d or dresser and refinish it to match your room. Keep these tips in mind as youre decorating or redecorating your room. Above all, give your space the decor Davenport said. When he moved here he kept saying, What does sluffing mean? He said that where he is from, they never use that word for skipping school. It just sounds gross! Davenport said she thinks Utahns have their own way of life and there is one thing Utah is definitely known for. We always called it BUH growing up, Davenport said.
