The Rebels swept Colorado Jorthwestern and College of Eastern Jtah over the weekend improving their record to 2 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and 19-- 4 overall. This places the Rebels in the No. 2 position in the 9-- SWAC. Friday night and the Bums Arena wrought defeat for the CNCC Spartans when the Rebels overcame a half-tim- e deficit to comeback and win Dixie 79-6- 7. trailed the Spartans throughout the entire first half, due to the consistent shooting percentage by CNCC at 52 percent from the floor. But Dixie came alive in the second half to send the Spartans back to Rangley, Col. And who was "King of the Stats?" None other than Jim Roban. He played 38 minutes of the game and scored a career- - high 27 points. Also in the scoring for the Friday night matchup was big man Rudy Williams with 15, Fred House added 12, "Mo" Baker had 10, and Vance Lawhom brought in seven for the Rebels. Victory blessed the Bums Arena the following night for the Rebels when they beat CEU The Rebels learned from the mishap the night before, letting CNCC jump ahead at the beginning of the game, but they didn't make that mistake again. They acquired their comfortable lead from the start and it was smooth sailing from there. Williams led the pack with 20 points, followed by Baker with 18 and Roban with 15. Also in the scoring was Khalid Coursey and Lawhorn each with 12, House added four and Sid Catlett had three. The Rebs are on the road this weekend to take on North Idaho College and Ricks. Athlete Spotlight All the way from Malcolm X Shabazz High School, Khalid Coursey has brought not only his love for the game, but also his skills to Dixie Colleges men's basketball. Coursey, a sophomore, majoring in Science, is on a full ride basketball scholarship. Most of Coursey's childhood was spent growing up in New Jersey with his parents James Cook and Avery Coursey. All the fun begins at 3:30 p.m. with a free baseball clinic with the Pioneerzz staff and players, where youngsters will learn professional baseball techniques from catching and fielding to hitting. He also has a seven month old daughter named Imani Sherrall Handford. Coursey started playing basketball when he was nine years old, on a 12 and under city league team with some friends. Ever since then, basketball has grown into more than just a game for Coursey, it has formed his life style. During high school Coursey was a double sport athlete. Not only did he show his skills on the basketball court, but he also did a little showing off on the football field. Coursey played all four years on his high school football team, and made the All State team his senior -- was nothing new to year. Being Coursey. During his four years on the Malcolm X Shabazz High School basketball team, Coursey was All -- State three years in a row. Coursey also made the team his senior year. Along with those, prestigious awards he also was chosen the Most Valuable Player at both the state championship games his team attended. Not to mention was the State Player of the Year for All-Sta- te 1997. This year Coursey is setting the court a blaze with his stats. Coursey leads the Scenic West Athletic Conference in steals, and also is fifth in the rankings for assists. Coursey averages 9.1 points , 4.7 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.6 steals a game. During Coursey's best game this year in a Kansas City tournament, he scored 18 points had eight assists and no turnovers. He was also named to the All- - Tournament team. "Our team is very unique in that we all get along and can actually stand each other for a whole season," said Coursey. "I expect us to get all the way to the National Tournament with this team." Coursey's plans after Dixie College involves heading to a college closer to home. When asked if there are any specific basketball prospects for the future, Coursey simply replied "nothing yet." |
