The federal agency has been reluctant to impose controls on proposed development, however, without the support of local elected officials. Whether the newly formed canyon coordinating committee can actually achieve the necessary compromises and establish a workable plan for the canyons is far from certain. The group, known as the Wasatch Canyon Interagency Coordinating Committee, holds its first meeting Wednesday The committee will consist of a policy group, composed of elected officials, supported by a tei hnieal group, composed of people expert in such fields as water development, pollution control, avalanche safety and highway maintenance. This enthusiasm for canyon planning was prompted by many factors, most important of which was probably the state's unsuccessful bid for the Winter Olympics Debate over the Olympic bid highlighted the almost total absence of long-terplanning for the canyons. ii yWTiilif I |
