Show 6B The Salt Lake Tribune, 19, 1986 February Wednesday, Television Today Novels on Cassette Tapes May Be Sound of Future All it took was a breakthrough by Jack Benny, a man so wealthy and celebrated that he couldn't be scorned for doing what they all wantearn money. ed to do With that lesson in mind, another I can't remember how many years ago it was, perhaps 20, when Jack Benny appeared in a television commercial. Up to then, no celebrity would be seen in a com-mercia- l, it was considered demeaning, crass, materialistic and common. Then someone got to Benny. Not to his agent, but to the star himself. And when the perennial pinch penny heard how much cash was involved he jumped at it. That seemed to be the key. Agents sniffed at prospects of their clients doing commershills. But when celebrities learned they could pick up a quick $30,000 or $40,000 for a days work, the floodgates opened. Soon Orson Welles and any number of other superstars were enjoying themselves between pictures by doing commercials.
