Protest groups see Mormons as a particular threat because of the churchs aggressive missionary program, he said. But to anyone who knows Mormons, there should be no fear they wont keep their promises. BYU spokesman Paul Richards said universitity officials have repeatedly given written and verbal assurances the center wont be used to stage missionary activities. He said because of historic attempts to convert Jews or kill them if they didnt he can underaccept Christianity stand Jews reactions to proselyting. "Weve had a study program in Israel for nearly two decades and are keenly aware of the sensitivities surrounding any Christian proselyting in Israel, said BYU President Jeffrey R. Holland. Weve given the government a formal, signed guarantee that this is a university facility and not a missionary center, as some of our opponents have erroneously suggested. Mr. Richards said Jews who point to a Mormon handbook on converting Jews dont understand that the publication is out of print and no longer used. He said an LDS translation of excerpts from the Book of Mormon is simply part of an ongoing translation program. LDS spokesman Don LeFevre said Mormon President Ezra Taft Benson has given assurances the Mormon Church will abide by BYU promises that LDS students won't proselytze. Rabbi Silver said some Mormons can be overbearing in missionary work and he hopes protests in Israel Tribune Staff Writer Protests in Israel against a Brigham Young University studies center may make Mormons more aware of why Jews deeply resent missionary activities, according to Rabbi Eric A. Silver, of Congregation Kol Ami, Utahs only synagogue. x But Jews are pointing to an LDS handbook on converting Jews and a Hebrew translation of Book oi Mormon excerpts to show that Mormons secretly plan to proselyte, a charge officials from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints deny. We think its improper for any Christian group expressing respect for us to engage in missionary activity among Jews and, in time, we hope our Mormon friends will realize that the feelings go beyond antipathy," said Rabbi Silver. For our part, we ought to be satisfied that Mormons keep their word. Some of my Mormon friends say to me, We wont push but one of these days youll see the light and do things our way, he said. But thats not the way to make friends; the nature of respect is accepting one for what he is, not what one wishes the other person to be. I love the Mormons, he said. I think its good that they see a portion of their history as stemming from the same holy soil as we do. I also respect them when they give their word. BYU officials said theyre hoping a g Israelis cabinet committee will assure moderate citizens that the center wont be used to stage missionary activities. If the government looks at the situation and comes up with recommendations, it may go a long way toward convincing ordinary citizens that the center will be used for university activities, said Mr. Richards. We keep x giving assurances but the Jews keep saying we plan to proselytze. Sometimes we get frustrated. Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres has said he has no legal way to stop construction of the center and he wouldnt want to if he did, said Mr. Richards. Once the committee reviews our verbal and written commitments, they will give us a clean bill of health. In the meantime, he added, construction is continuing unhampered. The center is scheduled to open in the spring of 1987. -- Reouest for proposals mov be obtained from the State of Utah, Deportment of Administrative Services, Division ot Purchasing, 2U?
