Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Drugs, "Really it has been a struggle to overcome some of the misconceptions that are put on you when you do something that has a religious connotation. Ive been struggling to just erase the religious feeling about me. I don't care if people know Im spiritual, but Im just a regular guy. Ive been busted for pot since then (his experience). I still have my problems. I guess Ill always be a drug addict. I have to work on that day to day. I found getting born again helped me turn my life around. The longer I was a Christian the more I found, you know, I dont want anybody to burn up. I want everybody to get that reward and find that love in them. I dont want to be liberal or anything, it was just a progression. ThomNASHVILLE, Tenn. as has no regrets about going public with his story of drug addiction, but he concedes it has posed a problem for his singing career. Thomas, who enjoyed tremendous success as a vocalist, was basically washed up by the time he was 30 because of drug addiction. But he kicked the habit, became a n Christian, concentrated on gospel music and wrote a book about his experiences. Ended Music Career "I personally believe now that big gospel exposure and the books and things virtually ended my music career, Thomas said in an interview. Its really been a hard struggle to just get back to a level and find an audience for my music. Once I did this in public, it really kind of turned a lot of people off people Id like to sing to. I have a lot of Jewish friends and Arabian friends and when I came out with this thing they thought B.J. doesnt like us any more. Religious Connotations But it may go deeper than that for B.J. Some of his hits have a lasting quality, including "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and "Hooked On A Feeling. Contemporary Country Thomas has a new album out now and he makes no apologies for it. It's contemporary country, not traditional as is the trend these days. not a departure from country. I've always had some country success, but I think even country radio people and the fans would agree I'm not a traditional country singer. "I can sing country music, but I'm not a George Jones. I try not to depart too far away from my country fans. Its more mainstream." Thomas said he was happy to see traditional artists like Ricky Skaggs get the Country Music Association Awards this year. Identity Problem But still, Thomas has to tackle his identity problem. "I have an identity problem. There are a lot of people in radio who control what is played who have confusion with who I am. I've been so many different places over the past few years that there will be some confusion. I let my music speak for me. I know I've done so many interviews on gospel, that it has confused many people. But Thomas says he hopes the confusion will be cleared up after a few more albums are released. Staying Consistent "Ive been blowing back and forth with the wind. One album will be Rocky films proved studios wrong to star this unknown, Sylvester Stallone. By Charles Champlin Los Angeles Times Writer HOLLYWOOD More money They Would Pay has been lost trying to imitate Rocky than Rocky has made, producer Irwin Winkler remarked at lunch a few days ago.' That might be hard to prove; "Rocky times four equals an awful lot of money. But it is true that Rocky continues to be the most inspirational film of recent years, having inspired "underdog makes good movies in almost every sport this side of hurling the caber. Remembers Rocky When studios start telling me why a particular film project wont work, I remember Rocky, Winkler went on. I remember that the biggest success Bob Chartoff and I have had was a film nobody wanted to make. To sweeten the contract that tied them exclusively to United Artists, Chartoff and Winkler had a provision that let them make what they called put pictures. Cheap Film If we could mae a film with a budget of under a million and a half, we could do it without script approval. So Rocky was going to be a put picture. We could make it for under a million five and we showed the script to UA. But the UA officials contended the film could not be made at that price and refused to put up the mon- So, Winkler says, he and Chartoff said they would the film for a million flat, and would mortgage their houses or whatever it took to put up the completion bond. In other words, if the film did go over budget, they would pay. It proceeded, not without adventures. The film presumably had wrapped when Stallone and director John Avildsen called the producers to say they had a great idea for a sequence in which Rocky would run up a long flight of steps and finally make it to the top and dance about triumphantly. The producers resisted briefit was more money on a thin ly but finally said, Go ahead budget and do it. They are glad they did. Doesnt Listen So when people give me reasons, I tell myself, if youd listened to reasons, you wouldnt have made et Rocky. Winkler has been listening to reasons on an adapta ion of Nikos The Last Temptation of Christ, which Martin Scorsese would like to shoot in Israel. Its a great humanistic story, and I am passionately devoted to it, Winkler says. No takers yet, but he hasnt given up hope. Latest Film He has been commuting to Paris, working with director Bertrand Tavernier on Around Midnight, a film based on the life in Europe of the ex ey. They gave us all the reasons the film would be a disaster. That was really why they didnt want to go with it. Fight pictures dont do well. Women wont go. Its violent and people dont like violence. It will never sell overseas. Not only all that, you want 30 s. STMl 166-025- The project took shape on a rainy Sunday in Paris when Winkler and Scorsese were en route home from a location-scoutin- g trip to Israel on Last Temptation and met Tavernier for a drink. But now here we were and we said well, of course, thats what would De Niro would have happened have come to Europe where he could play the kind of music he wanted to play. In the early 60s Winkler was working as an agent in the William Morris office in New York. They joined forces to meld their thin prospects.
