Theres an guage that no one besides the Globetrotters understands. Im playing pretty much straight basketball now maybe a trick or two against the Washington Generals, Woodard explained. Her schedule? It would make ady Thats all I had to know. I went right to work, said the bubbly Woodward. "I can't begin to tell you the number of people who helped me, but one of the most important was Campbell, who plays at Kansas and who was once with the St. Louis Zips, a team specializing in synchronized dribbling and passing drills. Lynette Woodard was like thousands of other youngsters in the 60s and 70s, delighting in the zany antics of the Harlem Globetrotters as they made their annual stop in Wichita, for a brilliant four-yecareer, wrote her cousin a letter about the prospects of becoming a Harlem Globetrotter. At least he didn't laugh, Lynette recalled. The dream of being a Globetrotter never dimmed for Woodward, even e as she became the women's, collegiate scorer at Kansas with 3,649 points for a season. Her burning ambition to gain admission to the magic circle would only be detoured by her duties as captain and star of the U.S. gold medal winning team in the 1984 Olympics. I remember Keith calling me that year in September, congratulating me on the gold medal. I asked him again about the prospects of joining the Globetrotters. Keith was nice about it, but it was still a polite no. I was so downhearted. It all seemed so close, yet so far away. It was a private moment deep in September of 1984 that Woodard her Maker, I cant believe You have blessed me with all this talent. Why? If You dont want me to use it, please remove the desire from my heart. Six months later, Lynette read the story in USA Today that the Globetrotters were going coed. ar Woodward maintained. It has been written that individuality is the salt of common life. You may have to live in a crowd, but you do not always have to live like that crowd. Lynnette knew early on she would live apart from the crowd. Woodard would watch her Trotter heroes for a night each year, "picking up what wizardry I could catch with the naked eye. Yes, just like the rest of us who yearned to twirl a basketball on an index finger or manipulate the ball up one arm, across the shoulders and down the other arm, it was the magic circle at midcourt that captivated Lynnette. To the bouncy strains of Sweet Georgia Brown, Lynnette would spend hours and hours as a youngster dribbling, passing and perfecting the sleight-of-han- d she knew full well she would one day exhibit in the magic circle. Lynnette had an in with the Trotters. No. 12 UNLV Pops Fresno; Spartans Stun No. 18 Mini By The Associated Press Fueled by 20 points from junior guard Nevada-La- s Ved Freddie Banks, gas swept to a 3 victory over Fresno State Sunday that even surprised Las Vegas Coach Jerry Tarkanian. I never expected to win this big here in Fresno. Fresno always plays hard at home and the key for us was not to let them play harder than we played, Tarkanian said. Fresno played hard and led for most of the first half, but Nevada-La- s Vegas outscored the Bulldogs 13-- 3 over the last five minutes of the half, took a 2 halftime lead, and never looked back at their Pacific Coast Athletic Association rivals. We played them fine for 15 minutes, then 12th-ranke- 68-5- 28-2- just went flat, said Fresno Coach Boyd Grant. Banks scored 14 of his points in the second half as Las Vegas broke the game open, leading by as many as 21 points. The loss was the biggest for Fresno State at home since 1976. Forward Armon Gilliam scored 16 points and forward Anthony Jones added 14 for Las Vegas, now 0 in conference and 15-- 2 overall. Forward Jos Kuipers led Fresno State with 18 points and Brian Salone scored 13 points and added 10 rebounds. Fresno State dropped to 2 in conference and 6 overall. nt 4-- 2-- 9-- sing, Mich., Jud Heathcote wasnt expecting perfection from his Michigan State basketball team, but thats what he got as the Spar18 of 18 tans converted a team-recor- d fye throws en route to a 1 upset of No. 18 Illinois. Senior guard Scott Skiles scored 22 points and junior guard Vernon Carr added 16, each making eight free throws, as the Spartans broke away from a 4 halftime tie for their second victory in four Big Ten Conference outings. It wasnt really our style, but our kids responded to the good, old Big Ten style, where every possession is crucial, Heathcote said. Carr keyed Michigan States second-hal- f spurt with 10 points. A basket by Ken Norman put Illinois ahead to start the second half, but Spartan guard Darryl Johnson pumped in a pair of jumpers and Carr added a basket to put Michigan State ahead, , Johnson finished with 12 points for Michigan State, which improved to 11-- 3 overall." 4 30-2- Notre Dame at BYU games since dropping an 7 decision at Indiana. Rivers, who shared the Notre Dame MVP award with Ken Barlow last season and was named College Freshman of the Year by Basketball Weekly, is credited with transforming the Irish from a patient, team into a uptempo unit. As Phelps points out, Rivers had more impact last year than any Irish freshman since Adrian Dantley averged 18.3 points in his rookie season of 1973-7I dont think the team was used to playing a fast style of game when I first got to Notre Dame, notes Rivers, who led the Irish in minutes played, field-goattempts, free throws, assists, steals and scoring in his freshman season. We tried running, but there were a few passes bouncing off the backs of peoples heads and a few more that were juggled. But it didnt take long for them to adjust. As far as the players here being taught to play my style of ball, I think thats one of the greatest compliments ever presented to me. He has some pretty good quicks and he shoots well, but he also plays some darn good defense. He plays defense about as well as any guard. David Rivers vs. Bob Capener. Youve heard a bit of Capeners case. Now the ball is in Rivers court. While often compared to a leaner version of Magic Johnson or Isiah Thomas, Rivers is the chief figure in Notre Dames court action. Exhibit A: Rivers, who started all 30 Notre Dame games as a freshman last season, collected 24 points and 5 assists against DePaul Saturday. I know from last year that hes a great dribbler and he does a lot of different things with the ball. Rivers handles the ball about 90 percent of the time when Notre Dame has it and he usually does something good with it. He runs their show. Of course, BYUs Capener can build a pretty solid case himself. The junior from Del Mar, Calif., has a four-inc- h height advantage on Rivers and is perhaps the finest outside shooter on the Cougar roster while averaging 12.9 points. Theres only one little flaw.
