Show t- 'm IjjjkfTrihunfFrjda March By G Brown Ever since the Pretenders emerged from the explosion in 1979 lead singer and songwrit-e- r Chrissie Hynde has been known as the sexy rocker with the thorny personality It is an image she claims is inaccurate "I seem to be threatening to everybody and I don't know why that is” Hynde said in a recent telephone interview "There seems to be this attitude that women in music or business have to be really tough to make it in a man's world I never found that a problem I just complained and nagged everyone to death until I got my own way "I just try to work in the capacity as one of the band members but people expect me to have Hell's Angels with crossbows opening the door” Some of that reaction has come from the way Hynde is perceived as running her band Since she is the only original member of the group left (drug overdoses killed guitarist James Honeyman-Scot- t and bassist Pete Farndon and former drummer Martin Chambers was dismissed last year) the job of fellow Pretender would not seem to offer much in the way of job security But Hynde’s energies have gone into keeping the devastated group together ‘‘It’s been hard to keep the band she said “We’re a guitar-base- d band and by losing the bass player and guitar player we were cut off at the ankles And when you make any changes in a band it’s got to come down to the music “That’s what happened with Martin who was a fantastic showman But when we took a couple of years off when I was having a baby and writing he went off and wasn’t playing And I don't think he realized it but I could certainly hear the difference” Hynde noted the contributions of current guitarist Robbie McIntosh who has worked into a role she do scribed as musical partner and right-han- d man “I've heard 'Oh it's not the Pretenders anymore why don’t you call it ‘the Chrissie Hynde solo project?’ And here’s Robbie who has dedicated his life to this band for the last four years It’s not fair” X)n the new “Get Close” LP Hynde has continued to combine her sexuality with rock sensibilities but many fans have sensed a slight departure Hynde who is married to Jim Kerr lead singer of Simple Minds had a daughter in March 1985 Before that a long-teraffair with Ray Davies of the Kinks produoed daughter Natalie age 4 Such material as “My Baby” and “Hymn for Her” would seem to be direct reflections of motherhood but Hynde railed at such easy classification “I think I was making more references to that sort of thing in the beginning" $he said "On our first album I had a song called ‘Lovers of Today’ which made references to ‘me and my baby' and I really meant a little baby it's like a lullaby And the song ’Kid’ was also on that album So in the meantime I have a couple of kids and suddenly all roads lead back to the maternity ward” Still Hynde admitted that parenting has affected her craft “I keep having babies between albums and it not only makes it hard to hold the guitar in those last months of pregnancy but you’re not in a rock 'n' roll mode mentally” she said “But at 35 1 still hear ‘You used to write about this hellcat rock 'n' roll image’ When you have a formula that works in this business people want you to keep repeating yourself If you change directions even slightly it kind of makes them nervous There's no point In trying to ape the past because when It works rock ‘n’ roll captures magic an atmosphere of its time" Hynde who admitted to being mired in the ’60s does not mind standing out from the competition "The bands that seem to make it on a post-pun- k T lijim Mil 6 1987 Pretender Chrissie Hynde not so tough after all?
