Show 'll 1 Warmth and personality fill Hawkins’ latest By Tom McCarthey Tribune Staff Writer Webster's New World Dictionary defines saxophone as any of a group of keyed woodwind instruments having a single reed conical bore and metal body usually curved In jazz circles one hears tenor alto soprano and baritone saxophones If you like the sax here's a look at some of the offerings now available on record album displays the enormous talents of another legendary jazz tenor man Sonny Rollins For the first time the quartet recordings with guitarist Jim Hall (January of 1962 to June of 1964) are presented chronologically All the cuts from his seminal "The Bridge" sessions are here too Rollins’ approach here is basically t music with Hall bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummers Ben Riley Mickey Roker or Harry T Saunders contributing equally But the horn man's tenor is so powerful that he dominates even when he doesn't mean to four-par- COLEMAN HAWKINS “Body And Soul” (Bluebird) — The first tenor saxman of note and one of the acknowledged masters of jazz Coleman Hawkins shaped the sound of the instrument for decades On this digitalset ly remastered 'Hawk’s" refined statements convey warmth and personality The material spans a period from 1939 when his classic "Body And Soul” was released to 1956 and "The Essence Of two-recor- A speech-likplayer with a percussive unorthodox style Rollins shines on "God Bless The Child" and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" His exceptional humor is evident on the Latin-tingetunes "Brownskin Girl" and "Don’t Stop The Carnival" e d d You" Hall proves that he is one of jazz guitar’s greatest stylists here with his lyrical invention and subtle swing The early stuff reflects Louis Arm- strong's strong percussive influence (they were colleagues in Fletcher Henderson’s band) while the later blues material has a decided bent courtesy of Charlie Parker’- impact While it seems odd to think of a musician of Hawkins' stature being influenced by anyone he was such that he could incorporate traces of others and turn it into a style all his own And that style allowed "Hawk’ to establish a tempo — not too slow not too fast — that sustained a romantic mood In other words he made it swing Wayne Shorter ‘Phantom Navigator’ be-bo- While some of the tunes sound de- cidedly dated the arrangements are timeless Whether it is "April In Paris" or "There Will Never Be Another You" Hawkins puts his body and soul into it "The Quartets Featuring Jim Hall” (Bluebird) — Another beautifully packaged remastered set from the Bluebird files this SONNY ROLLINS r SHORTER "Phantom Navigator" (Columbia) — The third solo album on Columbia for the founder of Weather Report “Phantom Navigator” takes us on a progressive musical voyage far beyond the ordinary Wayne Shorter's sonorous saxophone sails smoothly from start to finish riding a crest of human emotions mixed smartly with computer technology WAYNE Originally known as the tenor saxophonist with a tender touch Shorter The Salt Lakt Tribune M9 6 1967 Marsalis tackles virtuoso cornet is now a master of the soprano sax He employs both instruments with equal facility here soaring mightily most of the time "Condition Red" is a barnburner while "Mahogany Bird" is a lilting piece featuring Chick Corea at the piano The haunting "Flagships" and are the witty "Forbidden Plan-it!- ” rhythmically challenging particularly when Stu Goldberg soups up the synthesizers Whether Shorter has reached the pinnacle with Weather Report remains to be seen "Phantom Navigator” at least continues in the same vein Shorter describes the guiding spirit behind the new album thusly: "The Phantom Navigator is the one who takes us where we re going whether we want to or not" For Shorter fans it isn't a bad place to go DAVID SANBORN “A Change Of Heart” (Warner Bros) — An altoist rooted in Rhythm and Blues David Sanborn blows some tasty chops on "A Change Of Heart" There are hooks galore here but Sanborn manages to play them without condescension or overt cuteness "High Roller” cooks thanks to Mac Rebennack's fancy piano plinking and Marcus Miller's thundering bass lines Michael Sembello's synthesizer programming and background vocals add pop flavoring to "The Dream” while "Imogene” features drummer Steve Gadd Sanborn has found the right combination of pop and rock jazz and blues He plays an accessible brand of music that reflects the mood of the '80s Friday March -
