| Show la& -- I art suit environment purposes to a T als m By Pat Capson Tribune Lifestyle Writer Ann Hansen Sandy has found a way to combine two passions: art and - animals She designs continents in green against a heart-shape- d blue background to suggest my love of the earth Everywhere I carried them people asked where I bought them "Next thing I knew I was in business" she laughed "My parents Susie and Joe Hansen built an addition onto their Sandy home for a shop and I formed my own company which I call 'Just Cause' "I chose the slogan 'Every Day is Earth Day' for bags and because I felt disappointed when the world seemed to go back to normal the day after Earth Day was celebrated with such hype last April I wanted the commitment to contin- featuring col- orful drawings of endangered species Her collection includes elephants pandas and dolphins Whales are On the drawing board Encircling the art is the message "Every Day is Earth Day" At 26 Ms Hansen is a dedicated environmentalist convinced she and everyone else can play a part in pre serving the resources and inhabitants of our planet "One simple way of cutting down on the use of precious resources is to reuse products rather than throw them away" Ms Hansen said "Several years ago I started making canvas bags for my own use rather than accepting the paper and plastic bags offered in the stores "I made them in three sizes using the smallest as a lunch bag the medium size as a book bag and the large as a carryall big enough and strong enough to hold large quantities of groceries "I decorated the bags with a sketch of the North and South American ue" When Ms Hansen became interested in the enterprise she found it permitted her to give free rein to her artistic skills Since with a message are highly popular she feels they are a useful means of spreading the word about endangered species By offering them in small to large sizes she hopes children become attuned to the environment early: Each has a sewn-i- n tag with information similar to the one in the ele rt "Ten years ago there phant were 15 million elephants in Africa Today largely because they are being slaughtered for ivory there are only 750000 By the year 2000 they could be extinct Your purchases are your power Use it to protect wild- life" Ms Hansen draws her subjects in black and white and selects colors for the finished product She takes the art to silk printer Gary Seville for reproduction on the shirts which she buys in quantity from local wholesalers Business has been brisk although h advertising is only Ms When not designing Hansen works as a phlebotomist in the laboratory at Cottonwood Hospital in Murray drawing blood She graduated from Jordan High School and studied at Salt Lake Community College She hopes to return to school to pursue graphic art and illustration She enjoys skiing biking and hiking and can't remember a time she wasn't vitally interested in the world around her its people and animals As a youngster she was drawn to television programs and reading matter dealing with those subjects word-of-mout- PhD Associate Professor and Extension Specialist College of Family Life Utah State University LOGAN — Over the last 20 years the rates of teen-ag- e pregnancy and childbearing have increased dramatically These in- creases are great concern r"""""gr 1 : cause of the con- 'rz sequences to the mother and child t Lelt and also the socr- i etal costs ' An unmarried -adolescent moth' )1 er will cost sod- a ety an average of t $20000 per year each year until Dr Lee her child is 18 The mother and perhaps the teen father will receive less education have lower lifetime earnings and will lose many other opportunities they might otherwise have had Their child is more likely to be low birth weight be born with some delivery complication and to have a birth defect Most teens do not intend to become pregnant Rather it is the result of sexual experimentation This suggests two approaches to reducing the rates of teen births: educating adolescents about how to engage in sexual activity without becoming pregnant or educating adolescents about abstaining from sexual involvement For many reasons the latter approach would be the ideal The increase in sexual experimentation over the past two decades has coincided with an increase in experimentation with illegal drugs These be- - -t 1 4 - -- two facts seem related but it is not clear whether they are caused by a third factor or whether one caused the other One of the leading researchers in the area of adolescent drug use Denise Kandel recently conducted a study at Columbia University New York on the relationship between experimentation with drugs and sexual involvement Using a national sample of 2711 adolescents 14 years and older Kan-dlooked at several factors known to influence the likelihood of first sex These included family income race socioeconomic status family intactness and the subject's biological maturity conventionality and school factors Kandel reported in the Journal of Marriage and the Family that even taking into account the influence of all these factors the risk of early sex is greatly increased by the prior use of cigarettes alcohol and marijuana and other illicit drugs Early sex was defined as being before age 16 For boys 51 percent who had sex before 16 reported having used marijuana prior to sexual involvement For girls 60 percent reported such prior use Cigarette and alcohol use were even more likely to have been begun by those having early sex than by those not having early sex Eighty-on- e percent of boys and 88 percent of girls had used cigarettes and 57 percent of boys and 72 percent of girls had used alcohol The earlier the onset of drug involvement and the higher the level of drug involvement at the time of the study the greater the likelihood of early sex These patterns appeared for each ethnic group and income el levet Healing roses Continued From W-- 1 ed the rose garden but also its perpetual care The gift was in honor of the late Sister Ann Josephine CSC a former hospital administrator In addition to the roses there is an attractive fountain with tiles inscribed with the names of every sister who served at Holy Cross Hospital since 1876 The crowning touch to this beautiful garden is an exquisite marble statue from Italy "Madonna of the Street" depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child There are more than 600 rosebushes in the garden including new introductions and old favorites The Marie Shields rose a delightful pink miniature is planted around the fountain fence A section of the cast-iro- n that surrounded the original rose garden borders the south side of the new garden The garden was de r signed by David Racker landscape architect and Boyd Blackner designed the fountain While the garden is a lovely spot in the city where patients staff and visitors can relax among the roses its most important function is to symbolize ongoing commitment by Sisters of the Holy Cross to provide health care for those who have insufficient financial resources to meet health-car- e costs The mission of the rose garden is to encourage financial support to this charity care through gifts to the Holy Cross Hospital Foundation's active or endowment Charity Care Funds To recognize such donations permanent bronze plaques are installed on a wall within the garden that list names of those who contribute gifts of $2000 or more to assist the sisters in their commitment to Other delinquent activities also indicate a higher risk for early sexual activity Prior involvement in problem behaviors in general increases the likelihood of early sex This overall pattern of problem behavior relating to sexual activity has to do with what has been termed the "Deviance Syndrome" When adolescents deviate from accepted behavior in one area it increases the likelihood they will deviate in another In other words an adolescent skipping school is more likely to be involved in some other deviant behavior — shop-lif- t IF OM Due to a massive overstock situation D I i i ' 1 ronmental organization she believes is comprised of people who "do : something" tr CCM I CENTER 35 SOUTH STATE 3284631 K SANDY UPSON SQUARE 9450 S 681 E 571-732- 0 1 Te )110oft111116 IliU TAtt-Tm-n ERNIN HOLLADAY NEW LOCATION 4742 South 900 East 992-1599- S WEST VALLEY 2578 W 4700 S 966-0- 8 10 LAYTON 21 EAST GENTILE 544-691-1 OGDGN 2311 WASHINGTON 392-508- 1 :A "r I ' -
