Steven Rosen director of the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art in Logan said his institution is in a position to "redefine things like furniture to be a little adventuresome" He explained that items which turn up in craft shows in Utah often rank as art objects on the East Coast "A Dozen and One Utah Furniture Makers" which runs through Dec 16 at the Harrison features useful furniture that you sit on sleep on or put things in "We didn't want a lot of modern avant-gardcontemporary furniture The craft work is something we tried to concentrate on I don't think there is anything really standard about any of the pieces in the show" Rosen said About 20 works by 13 Utahns are included in the exhibition by Artspace director and sculptor Stephen Goldsmith who will give a free lecture at the Harrison on Oct 18 at 4:30 pm on "The Idea of Vernacular Furniture" In the exhibition catalog Goldsmith writes that the furniture-makin- g tradition of the area is based in its pioneer past: Pioneer furniture makers provided the community with goods second only in importance to food shelter and clothing Rosen said that from examples included in the show "we can see a continuation of a furniture-makin- g tradition in this state" To locate furniture designers Rosen announced the show in woodworking magazines and in newspapers across the state and contacted people working in the furniture business "I wanted to do it purposely that way just to see what would come up" Pieces in the show offer an extreme range in styles: from Goldsmith's contemporary "'Toolmaker's Bench for a Poet" to an inlaid table by Cedar City's Earl Sevy that Rosen calls "cowboy poetry" "If you drive south of Sevier County every home is going to have a table about this size inlaid with starbursts and everything else" Rosen said Another unique piece is a chair for observing a billiards game made by Ruth and John Sundberg of Oakley — furniture makers See 3 Column 1 -
