Show 1 2T The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday June 10 1990 Continued from 1-we order a blended fruit drink of papaya and banana next to the small pool before plunging into the adventures of the Jogja streets Far more than temples we are about to get a real sampling of Indonesia In front of the hotel several competing becak drivers rush over to us "Rp 5000 I take you to Kraton JaIan Marliaoboro" "Hey where you from?" I take you You want batik? I take you Only Rp 10000" We bargain for a Rp2000 (about $150) back roads tour ending at the famed shopping street JI Marlioboro and climb into the padded seat in front of the bicycle The driver peddles off already pointing out some of the hundreds of small Javanese batik and handicraft shops Jogja is famous for In front of a raucous bird market our driver asks if we can walk up the steep hill and wait for him to push the becak up reminding us to look into the shop of his friend on the way Later he veers down a quiet walled alley momentarily worrying us until the wall opens and spread before us are the ancient crumbled walls and turrets of the old city I vow to tip the driver generously for this treat as he no doubt expects From near a community water well toothless old women hurl insults at our driver in the language of Low Javanese which I don't understand Like many older Indonesians these women probably don't speak Indonesian a language that was adopted by the country in 1928 and has only been widely pushed since the 1960s English of a sort is also spoken these days in Indonesia a sign of the times Even the g Borneo jungles a place where up a muddy river looking for former headhunters can reveal wild looking young men popping up on the banks waving carved wooden statues and spears shouting "You buy! You buy!" Our becak driver peddles on leaving the cackling women to their gossip under the old walls Winding our way back through the narrow streets we come upon the Draton suddenly not recognizing it amid the city as it is Here is one of Indonesia's most revered sites the palace and seat of royalty in Muslim Indonesia for over two centuries Chickens scatter as our becak pulls into the entry yard Indonesia tourists come from far to see this symbol the place where Islam came to power in Indonesia over two centuries ago That power was so great that today the country is officially 85 percent Muslim but with a spirit of social and religious tolerance that seldom exists in Islamic countries Perhaps that is because even stronger beliefs underlie the social and religious fabric Women selling charms in the entry yard of the Draton tell of the millions of poor farmers and fishermen who believe in superstition mysticism and magic Laborers wear hats to ward off the "evil wind" Peasants rub their arms and necks with coins to cure illness Ghosts are feared by any reasonable adult At the Kraton today graceful women are practicing a Javanese dance of subtle finger and eye movements We linger for a time before finding our driver and moving on to the shops where we will load ourselves down with wooden puppets and batik In contrast with Jogjakarta Bali has more of a resort feel to it In fact by comparison Bali doesn't seem much like part of Indonesia at all The island lies just east of Java and is the last stop on the Asian continent before crossing the Wallace Line East of that hypothetical line the islands change to dry tropical desert the animals become exotically unfamiliar — Komodo Dragons kangaroos birds of paradise On Bali it is as if nature wanted to make one last stand and so she created an island of incredible fertility The Balinese people seem in harmony with their island They are and friendly spiritual and in touch with the effects of their actions on their environment Predominantly Hindu the Balinese actually came from central Java pushed out by the tidal wave of Islam 1 three-wheele- d good-nature- d easy-goin- g there I've heard there are more temples on Bali than houses Considering every house has its idol over the doorway every compound of houses has a central shrine every town has its huge temple grounds every rice field its woven grass platform for ofd ferings every escarpment its place of worship under a gnarly old banyan or rhododendron holy trees then one can see how the saying is true Religion and ritual are a key part of life in Bali both for the Balinese and for the tourist We can't avoid stepping on the tiny daily offerings of rice and flower petals on every doorstep and sidewalk But that's not a problem since once placed its up to the gods what to do with the offering Most often dogs eat the rice It is every Balinese citizen's right and duty to take part in the numerous religious or spiritual ceremonies performed daily The one place in Bali where tourists can get a glimpse of more elabo putt-puttin- moss-covere- rate or unusual ceremonies like cremations is the small hill town of Ubud on the rising jungle slopes of the central volcanoes Ubud is an artist's town with an eye for "nature dressed to advantage" Here you'll find many art shops on the main road and quiet shady restaurants with the tinkling sound of gamalang music The many stone temples and the long foot paths that wind into the forest between stone and clay walls give a mossy feel to Ubud Behind the shops lining the paved central road the land opens up into a patchwork of paddies On one side they look as if they stretch up to the tops of the distant volcanoes on the other they go right to the sea and the only things that break the pattern of dikes and colors are the palm trees an ancient stone temple and a water buffalo plowing the mud for another crop of rice Hiking in the rice patties is a pleasure few tourists take once they are in Ubud It's perfectly okay to do so in fact that is the only way that some houses or even villages can be reached by the locals And you never know what you'll discover In one of our wanders we found ourselves at the edge of a spectacular gorge In another we found ourselves in a clearing with a knot of people standing around a bull a huge burning papier-mach- e cremation in action As we walked up close we were surprised as the smoldering remains of the body fell from the belly of the bull where is had been entombed It was a reminder to us that such ceremonies are real not show for tourists While Ubud is probably one of the most relaxing tourist towns in the world Bali also sports one of the world's most hectic commercial n beach towns The strip on the southwestern bottom of Bali is lined by shop after shop of dazzling neon batik surf-wea- r Kuta is a sea of blonde and brown hair atop bits of this neon dazzle The wide sweeping beaches are awash with color and action from the Australian surfers to the European sunbathers unaware they are the bane of the Muslim government in Jakarta which clothed the Balinese girl of tropical innocence nearly two decades ago More Western tourists flock to the Kuta area than in all Indonesia put together and it's a spectacle not to be missed Most people go to Kuta first after arriving on Bali since it is only a 15 minute ride from the airport before you can be set up in your hotel Kuta-Leggia- bare-breaste- d bare-breaste- d eitS114tve lit4t11114‘s FAMILY VACATION CONDO RENTALS ts JUNE 12 OFF 011OIIMMUMENIMMI We took our first balloon flight last summer while spending the weekend in Park City We were picked up at our hotel at 6 am and driven to the launch field Our balloonist unfurled the balloon with help from our children and hooked up the burners and basket The hot air from the burners slowly filled the balloon until it lifted itself above the basket and we climbed aboard By changing the altitude of the balloon the balloonist looked for a wind that would take us over the mountains and some of the vast unpopulated areas that surround us With the burners off the balloon drifted over the tree tops as we searched for animals down below Although the balloon stayed in radio communication with the chase vehicle we lost visual contact shortly afWe were alone floating ter take-of- f in the ephemeral atmosphere that cloaks the earth Eventually we saw a road but we didn't know what road and a field in which we could land We prepared for the that occurs when the basket hits the ground After climbing out and trying
