the first date the first time the first fight and the first serious talk about where your relationship is headed But the real test of your mettle as a couple is still to come: your first vacation together I don't mean a weekend interlude at a fancy hotel with room service at your beck and call a private Jacuzzi and his and her sinks so that not even your toiletries need merge I mean the sort of trip in which the two of you — along with your possessions dirty laundry and all — are thrown together for an extended period of time in not always idyllic circumstances That means having to waiting Estimates were of an 80 percent voter turnout" With the election Nicaragua emerged from nine years of civil war that claimed 30000 lives and left the economy in tatters Mrs Chamorro 60 United promised peace to the nation's 35 million as candidate of a National Opposition coalition "Every person I talked to was affected by the war" Mr Campbell said "Everyone suffered If not from the emotional losses of family and friends killed wounded maimed then the economic consequences were deadly" What the Nicaraguan people chose was not Mrs Chamorro as a strong political leader so much as the peace process "The Nicaraguan people didn't vote for Chamorro but against war" Dr Burki observed "After the election there were no massive victory celebrations no joyous outbursts The choice was to stop war Peace was the important issue The Nicaraguans have been tortured by war for 10 years" Mr Campbell urged the United States to help Nicaragua move forward in the peace quest not foment civil war and help rebuild the country For both seeing what happened in Nicaragua makes them more certain of what they think should happen here "The tendency in America is to leave things to others" Dr Burki said "I believe we all should be more active" Harvard-trainesaid instead of American money Dr Burki Swiss-borused destructively and to inflict pain it should be used for social programs — building homes for the homeless feeding the hungry offering medical help "We must look to our own country curing hunger and disease In medical articles more and more I'm seeing the effects of hunger on the growth and development of children And hunger is a curable disease" Mr Campbell learned from his Nicaraguan involvement that he's part of a grass-root- s group of social activists "I discovered that I'm part of a small minority of activists but that there are thousands like us" "Decide what you'll do with your life" Dr Burki urged "and where to put your energy Decide what you'll do and what you want your children to see you doing" Mr Campbell and Dr Burki's three sons know where their parents are By waging peace in Nicar&gua she protested the Assistant Lifestyle Editor For Salt Lake gynecologist Dr Regrula Burki and University of Utah economist Al Campbell no news from Nicaragua is bad news They have more than passing interest in what's going on in the Central American country in the past the subject of heated American debate Dr Burki and Mr Campbell keep track They have a history a philosophical stake and have made sacrifices leaving their three sons and Salt Lake home to travel south The two journeyed in February to Nicaragua to monitor elections part of a three-levstructure of official observers each with credentials and picture-card identification They watched Violeta Barrios de Chamorro's ascent to power and President Daniel Ortega's defeat One observer group was sponsored by the United Nations and the Organization of American States Another including former US President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter involved elected heads of state invited by the Nicaraguan government Mr Campbell was part of a group of economists there observing the election as a process for building the country The couple was with people from all over the world who thought it important to be there taking part in a democratic voting process "It's not unusual for world
