Q. It is safely assumed that the two greatest British statesmen of the 20th century were David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. Were both of these men oversexed? Is that a requisite for great statesmanship? D.E.E., Cambridge, Mass. A. Lloyd George was surely an oversexed womanizer. Most of his biographers refer to his strong sexual appetites. This was not true of Churchill, however, who sexually was pretty much of a straight arrow. There seems to be no positive correlation between sexuality and statesmanship. But who is most responsible for the failure of U.S. policy in Iran under the departed Shah?R. De Jesus, Los Angeles, Cal. A. Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon instituted the open-ende- d commitment to the Shah in 1972 so he could purchase an almost endless supply of sophisticated weaponry from the U.S. and be assured of our backing. The pair regarded the Shah as a "regional influential," and their support of him was continued by Brzezinski and Carter. The CIA and State Department under Kissinger reported "no danger ahead signals" for the Shah. And even when former CIA Director Richard Helms was Ambassador to Iran 1973-7there were no warnthat Shah the was ings being opposed by commercial and religious elements in his country.
