Show teiL. aMWi'WNili utm in vino writ its Better wines are coming to Utah by Col Jack Daniels EDITORS NOTE: Colonel Daniels is Regional Director of Les Amis du Vin and has founded Chapters in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. SOME INTERESTING statistics on wine consumption have been released by The Utah Liquor Americans consume 1.9 gallons per Commission which is a annually, capita small fraction of the 29 or 30 gallons the Italians and French consume per person per year. In Utah, the per capita consumption of wine is a miniscule .74 gallons per year. Neighboring Nevada, assisted no doubt by the steady flow of thousands of tourists shows a 4.98 gallon figure, a consumption rate topped only by Col. Daniels Washington D.C. at 5.41. Col- orado has become wine conscious fairly recently and LEX now exceeds the national average with 2.12 gallons imbibed and Idaho, where table wine is now allowed to be sold in grocery stores, is still low at 1.49 gallons average. Of the 10 Western States Montana and Wyoming are the lowest 1.19 and 1.22 gallons consumed per year. California, producer of 80 of our American wines records 4.08 gallons. Now that better and more varied wines are coming into the Utah stores (Store No. 1 at 4th South and 2nd West in particular), perhaps more drinking Utahns will join the trend in switching from hard spirits to wine. When drunk in moderation it is a more healthful beverage. Newly arrived in our ULC stores are a fine port from Ficklin and an equally fine Gattinara. The latter (Code 5071 at $6.60) is one of the best, a flavorful Italian wine made from Italys noble grape ... the Nebbiolo. This bottling, 1973, was not a good vintage, even so it has great power, surely due to vinification by Mario Antoniolo who gave it plenty of wood and tanim. These beverages were sampled at for Obis sign! the Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs dinner, a completely Italian presentation at the Hotel Utah in thj lovley Empire Room on April 28th. MY HYPOTHESIS would be that the Gattinara will not peak until 1981-8- 3 and then will remain at full flavor until 1985-8Hugh Johnson, referring to the wine makers of this area just north of a line drawn from Turin to Milan, writes that they use the Nebbiolo grape to, make wine like the famous Barolo, often less good but sometimes, particularly at Gattinara and Ghemme, even better. The great years for Gattinara were 1964 and 1974 which were rated 10 out of 10 by Dr. Pier Garoglio, President of the Italian Academy of Vines and Wines, Florence, Italy. I tasted my first Gattinara many 'years ago in Como, Italy, having crossed over from Switzerland on a Lago Maggiore steamer. Even then I believed it to be an exceptional wine and enjoyed some lengthy discussion on its qualities in a very sketchy Italian, arriving at a decision, aided no doubt by the hot sun and joyful company, that it far surpassed the usual Italian wines. It was pleasant to myself with an old friend and to discover that time had not shattered an illusion. Wine drinkers of Utah are fortunate to have had the Gattinara selected by Les Amis du Vin as a W'ine of the Month in our stores.
