' Granted that the relationship between the veteran commentator and news chief Roone wasnt a marriage made in as Smith is the first to heaven, concede, but he should at least be given an opportunity to say farewell tQhis millions of fans. Ar-led- It doesnt speak well of ABC News, or broadcasting in said What happened, general. Smith, is they gradually shut out my access to the air. BETWEEN NOW and May 31, when his ABC contract expires, it is unlikely that you will see Smith on screen again. He got an inkling he was being bypassed, he said, when he was left out of coverage of presidential press conI ferences and special programs. began to feel isolated, he said. Then one day, Av Westin, producer of ABC World News Tonight, informed him that they were dropping one of his commentaries for more important news. This was followed on April 3 by a visit from Richard Wald, senior vice president for news under Arledge, who comconfirmed that his thrice-weekl- y mentaries would be curtailed. WHATLL I DO? asked Smith, bewildered by the decision. I have no function. According to the newsman, Wald said: Theyre going to make you an offer. Smith expected the offer on April 6. That evening Wald called and said that it would have to wait until Wednesday Aprilll at 10 a.m. That Wednesday, Walds secretary called and said he had gone to Florida. Smith waited a week and still no call. So Smith wrote to Arledge that he was resigning at the expiration of his contract. WALD, WHO WAS bounced as head of NBC News, with we might add, the same compassion, admitted that the Roone Arledge sequence of events was true. He said that he was in Florida and failed to keep an appointment with Smith. He insists, however, that they planned to use commentaries occasionally. If so, then why not meet with Smith and iron it out? After all, he has been a major figure in broadcasting and deserves better treatment: Smith de- scribed both Wald and David Burke, former aide to Gov. Carey and now an ABC News vice president, as hostile. News Whats behind the Smith-ABfallout is this: Smith has long been an advocate of the single anchorman although he says now that he would not like the assignment and he was highly critical, in the beginning of ABCs multiple-ancho- r concept. He called it a Punch and Judy show and wanted no part of it. He originally the news with Frank Reynolds and then Harry Reasoner, but was phased out when Barbara Walters entered the picture. IRONICALLY, SMITH was the recipient of the Spirit of Independence award for excellence in broadcasting in 1977 from the National Association of Broadcasters. It was this independence in commentaries on CBS during the civil rights battle that got him fired from that network. William S. Paley, CBS chairman who objected to his commentaries, asked him to write an essay about what CBS When he stood for, Smith recalled. read it one day at lunch he tossed it across the table and told me to look for another job. Paley is the opposite of Voltaire. He believes in what you say but not in your right to say it. Much later everybody was saying what I did about civil rights and its inevitability. SMITH, WHO IS lecturing at the moment, has made no decisions about his future. Would he go to another network? He laughed, then replied: I think Ive run out of them.
