News stories tell of another, more contemporary East with multiple races, multiple faiths, and new nations unique political systems seeking new identities. While both views may be somewhat accurate, neither tells a complete story of the varigated societies of Asia. NOW, A NEW television series, Views Of Asia, offers Americans a broader picture of Asian socieites and the forces that shape them. A collection-series of documentaries, features, and performance programs, Views Of nationAsia represents an wide public television effort to expand Americans historical perspective, and understanding of Asians and their cultures. The series is presented on PBS by KQEDSan Francisco under a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Views Of Asia debuts Thursday, on KB YU at 7 pm.; and on KUED at 9 p.m. While the programs show some of the regions natural beauty and exotic qualities, they focus pnmanly on historical, economic, sociological, religious, political, and artistic aspects. Areas involved are Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and China. INDONESIA, A NEW country since World War II, has the national slogan of Unity in Diversity. But, unity is more a hope than a reality for a nation of 3,000 islands and 300 ethnic groups speaking nearly as many languages. A young sculptor carves a statue for the Balinese art tourist trade in the premiere of Views of Asia series, Indonesia: Unity in Diversity, airing Thursday at 7 p.m. onKBYUand9 p.m. on KUED. . Highlights of the film include an examination of the Indonesian concept of power (that there is a finite amount of it in the world) and the role of the Indonesian army as an essential ingredient in the society. The film tells the story of a nation of 125 million people spread over 3.000 islands in 300 different ethnic groups, speaking nearly as many languages. It traces Dutch colonial influence on Indonesia and examines the countrys quest for national identity and a sense of unity. THE DUTCH CAPTURED the trading port of Malacca on the Malay peninsula and subsequently set up trading conti acts which led to nearly 400 years of colonial domination throughout the Indonesian islands. Japan occupied the area in World War II, and there followed another four years of savage fighting against the returning Dutch and briefly against a British force. Nationalist emotion finally overcame cultural diversity and regional loyalties and led to independence under Indonesias first president, Sukarno. A liberal democracy was European-styl- e tned first, but gave way to a mixture of local and imported ideas called guided democracy.
