If From S1 1 99 towremoto $1499 control SAV-MOR- TV E Tribune Staff Writer The Salt Lake County Fire Department has installed a new air compressor designed to provide firefighters with an immediate and inexhaustable supply of air by recharging their air bottles. According to Chief Charles Paris, the device will improve the fire departments ability to fight fires by allowing the county fire department to recharge spent air supply bottles immediately . Before the device was installed, the chief said, the county had to have private businesses recharge the bottles. Chief Paris said there had been occasions usually during a major fire when the county had run out of air bottles and had to borrow them from other departments. But now, the county can recharge the bottles as quickly as they are used. Gives Men Protection Having the proper air supply system is the most feasible way to fight a fire, Qhief Paris said. It gives the men protection of their lungs, and also allows them to work in smoky or exceptionally hot fires. The county fire department stresses that its personnel use air masks at all fires. This reduces the chance of smoke inhalation or the possibility of a fireman getting a hot lung, an emphysema-lik- e condition caused by inhaling superheated air or even flame. Chief Paris said the device, located at the county fire departments main station at 3690 S. Main, is the first of its kind in the county. However, he noted that it would be available for use by all fire departments who need it. Can Fill Portable Tank In addition to refilling air bottles, the device also will be used to fill a portable tank on one of the departments trucks, so firefighters can have a supply of air to recharge the bottles at the scene of a fire. The device, which costs more than $16,000, consists of a compressor, filtering system and a storage unit, and is able to fill an air bottle with a capacity of 2,200 pounds pressure in 45 sec onds. Chief Paris noted that the county fire department does not use pure oxygen in the bottles because the gas is much too flam mable. Depends on Work The length of time one bottle lasts depends on how hard a fireman is working. For example, a fire fighter using a shovel or axe would use a bottle up faster than a person supervising the operation. The air compressor, purchased from the American Bristol Co., Harbor City, Calif., also has filtering devices which filter out impurities before air is pumped into the bottles. Sine 1970 12619 So.
