Show Airmen Rescue in Drops From Sides Continued From Page equipment to drop into any terrain, in any weather on any spot on the globe. And when they say any spot, they mean any spot oeeans, mountains, deserts or jungles. A PJ's" training starts ith the U.S. Army parachute jump school at Fort Benning, Ga , which is followed by scuba diving training in Florida. Then comes survival school at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Wash. There the ' 1J" trainees learn how to live off the land, build shel-te- i s, and escape and evade enemy" forces. After survival school they are shipped to Shepherd AFB in Texas where they attend a medical school. There they learn how to treat battlefield wounds, set broken legs and even deliver babies. Then comes advanced training in the same areas. They learn how to parachute with full scuba gear into water, learn mountain rescue techniques and are put through more survival training. When they finish their final survival course they are awarded the coveted maroon beret. Other Training But the training doesn't ?nd there. The PJs revive recondo training, some go through an avalanche chool in Alaska, and some ilso receive HALO training. HALO is an acronym for ligh Altitude Low Opening. I o evade detection by enemy adar, the PJs are trained n HALO school to exit their urcraft at a high altitude, reefali down to an altitude jelow the sweep of the four-wee- k enemy radar, then pop open their chutes at the last minute. Needless to say, throughout the training program, follow a strict P.Js the legimen of physical conditioning. But all the conditioning and training has a purpose, and thats to save lives. And in Utah, the PJs services are often in demand. Since the first of the year alone the unit has five saves" to its credit: On Jan. 27, the unit received a rescue call in the Powder Mountain area. Two y skiers were caught in a snow storm before they could make it out of the touring area. A helicopter from the unit the area and found the two skiers. Using a speaker system mounted on the helicopter, the pilot directed a nearby snowcat to the stranded travelers. A PJ was lowered to check the skiers condition, and they were found to be tired and hungry, but okay. Snowmobile Incident On Feb. 2, two had driven their vehicle into ? draw in Scare Canyoii in the Monte Cristo area. Once in the draw, the snowmobilers got stuck and couldnt get out. The unit was summoned and the lost travelers were found. PJs were lowered and the snowmobilers were found to be in good condition. Then the entire party was lifted into the helicopter and flown out. In March, a rescue helicopter and crew was assigned to Snow Basin ski resort to act as medical support for the Air Force ski races being held there. In an -- cross-countr- accident unrelated to the races, a woman skier her leg She was taken to the ski lodge where PJ SSgt Charles W. Walls and a civilian paramedic treated her. She was then placed on the helicopter and taken on a flight to St. Benedicts Hospital in Ogden. Besides being a service to the community, these local rescues have an added bonus for the PJs nobody is shooting at them. MSgt. C E. Panning, the officer in charge of the PJs, is a case in point. The sergeant was stationed in Vietnam in May, 1972 during a large North Vietnamese offensive into the south. A force of 180 American and South Vietnamese personnel had been cut off by 30,000 North Vietnamese troops at a communications ba.se called Quang Tri. The Americans and South Vietnamese were holding out with American air strikes, but they had to be rescued.
