Meet these h young men and women on these pages as and possibly tomorrows leaders the Deseret News and KSL present the Sterling Scholar Gass of 78. On these pages you'll find the photographs and names of 453 of Utah's p students wdw will be graduating from 40 high schools along the Wasatch Front. They are the nominees selected at Theif schools to compete in the 17th annual Deseret News Sterling Scholar Awards program To he selected from among their peers at their school is honor in itself When the program comes to a climax on April 26, a winner and two runners-u- p will have been named m each of 12 major categories of scholastic competition. This years program actually began last fall when schools were invited to participate. Each school designated a faculty adviser to serve as coordinator of the program; however, the final selection of nominees was made by the principal. The school selected one nominee in each category although the school was not required to enter each category if it felt there was not a student qualified for that category. The students then compiled evidence of their school and community achievements in a journal, or portfolio, which was sent to the Deseret News. r; -- rjgjtr i s 'x ; V V.- . i ? X i ('' V'i.ii'. !
