When Lorenzo was fouiteen years of age, Mormon missionaries came Into his neighborhood, and he and his mother (who was a widow) were both converted and baptized. In 1842 they emigrated to Nauvoo, which was then the gathering place of the Mormon people. Lorenzo remained there until 1844. when he undertook a mission for the Church to the New England States. He remained all winter on the Missouri river, occasionally making trips to the Missouri settlements for supplies. In 1948 he and his brothers established a wagon shop in St. Joseph, Missouri. They were successful in this venture and made enough money to purchase equipment to cross the plains to Utah in 1850. They arrived in Salt Lake Valley in September of that year. Lorenzo moved to Iehi in Ufah county in the spring of 1?51 and took up a farm. During the same tear he was married to Sylvia In 1852 he and his Eastman. brother Abram and Nathan Packer built a grist mill at the mouth of American Fork Canyon. In 1855 I.orenzo H. Hatch was selected as first counselor to Bishop David Evans of Lehi Ward. He served as acting Bishop while Bishop Etans fulfilled t mission to Wales. He also served as a member of the City Council of Lehi. and was elected for one term to the Territorial Legislature which met at Fillmore. H traveled with forty other missionaries across the plains eastward with ox teams to the .Missouri river; from there he went by boat to Ft. Louis and from St. Louis to Pittsburgh. He sailed frohn New York City to Liverpool. In England he labored in four different conferences, Sheffield, Bradford, Lincolnshire and Hull. In 1858.
