IBlfri Yilftl r1- The Road Builder OLOF NELSON it was sixty-si- x years ago that Olof Nelson, then living in Sweden, decided to cast his lot with Americans and came to this country at the age of 19. He arrived in New York in 1885 and went to Minnesota where many of his countrymen resided. He worked in Minnesota at his trade of bricklayer for a while and then took work in Kansas City, Missouri. Hearing about the west and no doubt taking Horace Greeley's advice which was: "Go West Young Man Go West," he went to Montana. About five years after arriving in America, however, he came to Logan and throughout the years grew to be one of the leading contractors in the intermountain area. He is accredited with being responsible for a large percentage of the brick homes built in Cache Valley. He followed his trade, which he learned in Sweden, until about twenty-fiv- e years ago when he changed to major contracting for highways, bridges, etc. The Olof Nelson Construction company has built thousands of miles of roadway in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and other sections of the Intermountain area, including some of the roads in Yellowstone Park. While the company has specialized in road construction, much other industrial building has been done. The firm did much of the construction work at the Logan-Cach- e Airport including runways and roads. Olof Nelson has the distinction of being one of three contractors in the intermountain area who has a fifty year award of merit from the Associated Contractors of America.
