FOUR OUR HUNDRED MEET DEATH COLLAPSE OF NEW WATER RES AT MADRID SPAIN people are horrified Horri fed and ind gnant over accident claiming it could have been prevented four hundred persons were killed or injured saturday by the collapse of a new water reservoir in course of con st ruction in madrid spain the catastrophe caused a profound sensation throughout the city all work was suspended and the pe pie flocked to the scene As the day passed the indignation and excitement increased and serious disorders are feared as it is charged by many that the disaster had long been foreseen by the authorities in charge of the work worl and that this terri ble disaster could have been prevented A workman who was injured says the collapse was so sudden and corn com that it was impossible to tell what happened the men at work on the reservoir however anticipated trouble as a fortnight ago three arches collapsed and cracks devel aped in four others the public hold the engineers and contractors cespon sible for the catastrophe into which the cabinet has ordered a strict in the structure which collapsed was a huge quadrilateral by me tres built on arches the disaster was due to the weakness of the sup porting pillars As the greater part of the debris is under water the work of extricating the victims is most dim cult
