WHO OWNS THE RAILROADS H newcomb of the district of columbia bar has compiled statistics showing that depositors in savings basks of six eastern states are directly interested in the joint ownership of of steam railroad securities that insurance companies doing business in mass hold of steam railroad stocks and bonds and 74 edu cat lonal institutions depend on 47 invested in similar securities or a portion of their income other fiduciary institutions own enough railroad securities to bring such hold ing up to more than a billion and a half dollars about one irth of the entire capital invested in property these investments depre ent the savings of the masses there being twenty million holders of life in aurance policies in the country a many more of fire insurance policies and an even greater number of depositors po in banking and trust alons where investments are largely in railroad securities
