Show www.moabhappenmgs.com Moab Happenings Jerry Jaran: Primal Landscapes Jerry Jaran has been a Moab resident since 1994. He was drawn to the Moab Valley because of the awesome landscape and unmatched sensuality of the rock formations and canyon walls. Jaran, by profession, is a freelance sign designer. He owns and operates Able Sign Design. Jaran, by craft, is a sculptor, first and foremost, working with brass, bronze, wood and leather. In his current artwork he harmonizes his love for sculpture with his keen sense of imagery. Jaran calls his current work primal landscapes, sandstone with the realistic combining the high-reliPrimal to the originality and refers landscape. archetypal quality of the sandstone, as the sandstone cliffs stand as a testament to the endurance of rock two-dimensio- ef time. throughout Landscape refers to the representation of the landscape nestled firmly into the rock wall. But in a strict sense of the word, landscape could also refer to the rich topography of the high relief. The representation of sandstone in high relief form is Jaran's invention. Using a variety of plastics and alkyd oil paint Jaran recreates large rises, deep crevices, and the abrasive texture and color of the sandstone. Sculptural in nature, the two-inc- h high relief invites the eye and hand to caress the texture of the July 2000 21B f,. again reminding the viewer of the reality of erosion, of the power nature has over culture. Finally, it occurs to the viewer that Open Circle speaks of time and timelessness. As the geometric shape is somehow infected by the rock texture, the rock surface seems to remain pristine. Jaran is planning on exploring tonalism in his next series of works. Tonalism refers to removing the detail of the realist landscape, allowing the tones of the view become the subject of the painting. This technique is very similar to the work of Impressionism. He intends to continue his series of high-reliworks in sandstone, expanding on dualities and discovering new horizons in contrast and compliment. Visit Jaran's high relief ef representation at several locations, including the Moab Municipal Airport, Back of Beyond Bookstore, Desert Oasis Bed and Breakfast and the new Rock Coffeehouse and Gallery. Also look for his paintings surface. Juxtaposing the textured relief, Jaran imbeds a smooth and detailed landscape into the representation. His earlier pieces combine the rock-wor- k with a geometric abstraction. Looking at one of his earlier pieces. Open Circle, on-li- at ne www.artquest.com. A deep green black verging on pthalo-gree- n colors the central disc. On the surface several dualities are explored: roughsmooth; literalabstract; ancient modern; organicplastic; natureculture. But beneath the surface, in a second appraisal of the piece, one grasps the orange break in the circle, disrupting the seamless integrity of the disc.
