He mentioned the lack of attendance by the current county commissioners to citizen events in the area. He feels they are net in touch with what the county residents want and need. Monte Chamberlain gave a short presentation on land use, showing how much trust land was traded out of the monument. There are 5.7 million acres in one current bill. Special interest groups, including Utah Wilderness Association, want 9.1 million acres. However, BLM put forth only 1.9 million acres as actually qualifying for wilderness designation. It was pointed out that the WSA's are the worst designation for the land, as it stops all activity and it may not be studied for 20 years. Wilderness then becomes a situation, as all roads & other manmade structures will disappear in that time. Mike feels the economic development should be based on the values and resources of our area. Logging and uranium mining are not dead resources in Kane County. We can not allow the federal government to dictate our choice of lifestyle, telling us we must make do with tourism. Mike stated we need to provide resource based jobs to keep our youth in the area.
