For many people, it serves as a cue to clear away the dust and clutter that can accumulate during the winter months. If youre the ifyoure spring-cleanin- even type-an- d g the time to give your car a spring cleaning as well. Washing and waxing your automotive baby is a good beginning, but only a beginning. Cars work hard over the winter, said Bill Mayer, assistant vice president ofGovernment Employees Insurance Company (GEICO). Between the cold, the precipitation and the road salt, your vehicle is ready for some attention by the time spring arrives. Mayer suggested that the following checkups make a nice reward for your car for making it through another winter. Change your oil and filter at least every 5,000 miles. Oil as well as lubricates; clean, oil helps your vehicles engine stay cool and comfortable in all kinds of weather. You should check your oil every time you get gas to make sure the level is right. Check your transmission and radiator fluids. Top them off if theyre low. Your owners manual will tell you what kind of trans- amission fluid you should use. To fill your- radiator, use a half--' not-now- s well-filtere- d - water, half-coola- nt mixture. Always let your engine cool before adding fluid: adding cold fluid to a hot radiator can cause serious engine damage. Be sure your tires are inflated to the recommended pressure for your vehicle; this will improve your cars handling and gas mileage. Inspect tires for cuts, bulges and excessive or uneven tread wear, which might indicate misalignment, under-o- r overinflation, or a balancing problepi. Ifyou havent done so within the past year, replace your windy shield wiper if the re worn or brittle-t- o ensure that you can see as well as possible during spring showers. Also, check you windshield washer reservoir and fill it with washer fluid as needed. Check all belts and hoses for signs of wear; replace worn or frayed belts and soft, brittle or cracked hoses. If one cf these breaks, it could leaveyou stranded many miles from assistance. Make sure your headlights, brake lights, turn signals and blades-especiall- emergency flashers function properly. Your chances of getting in an accident increase if others on the road cant see you or tell what you intend to do. Springtime gives us a fresh start, Mayer said, but you can be stopped in your tracks by a vehicle that hasnt been maintained properly. Take care of your car, and, of course, yourself and your loved ones. ' ' : |
