This has been my first week on the job here, and Ive already talked to three groups of people and had my picture taken! I was a bit nervous when I addressed the first group, but Brittany Daniels from Washington Elementary School sure calmed my nerves when she started telling me about all the bake sales her class had. They raised $300 for Best Friends and then got to come here just to meet me! (OK, well I added the last part.) But seriously folks, she said it was really neat to visit the sanctuary through her school and that I had a very pretty face! (Boy, my first day was a success indeed). On my second day on the job, I spoke to another school. One of the students, Robert Grainger frpm the Alexander Dawson School,-tolme he really liked the educational birds, but then he went on to say how cool it was to see Hilltop the owl so close up! This did ruffle my feathers a bit, but Robert and his classmates helped lay a new rock path for the people who visit us educational birds. And on my third day, I had my picture taken with Meghan and Monty Warren, two adorable children from the Verde Valley School in Arizona. Meghan kept saying how neat and pretty I was - to which I say, well, you , d cant argue with the truth. thats the end of the lecture, folks. Keep flying high, everybody. And remember, as the old saying should have said: A bird in the bush is worth two So, in your hand. adopted a proclamation on Public Health Week activities April & sl00 d blackbird Im a and I recently graduated as part of the Best Friends wildlife reha-- ' bilitation program. Our job as educational birds is to teach people about the wildlife thats all around us and to help you understand how to protect us all. How did I graduate into this profession? Well, (in addition to my high intelligence and sparkling personality, of course) its because my wing had to be taken off by the doctor. Most of the wild birds who recover from their injuries can soon be released back into the skies. But a few of us who just cant fly properly again can become part of, the educational . program. So, as well as me, theres Primrose whos a turkey vulture, and owl. Hilltop whos a We have state and federal permits to stay here at Best Friends in big aviaries where were surrounded by nature (it really is a lot like being in the wild!) Now listen up, all of you, because heres the most important thing you need to know: If you find a bird thats obviously injured, take it to someone who is trained and has a permit in taking care of wild birds. (In the Kanab area, thats us here at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.) Thats the only way birds like me can get the attention that we need right away. Thats what happened with Hilltop when he was found, and thats yellow-heade- The 1998 Kane County Royalty crowned at last week's scholarship pageant include 1st Attendant Sara Vreeken, Miss Kane County Torrie Casebolt and 2nd Attendant Susan Sorensen.
