Brought to you by Kane County Hospital : ss leprechaun lived in Baltergreen, a town on the highest mountain in the land. He was a mischievous creature, considered to have magical powers. He always wore an emerald green hat and a brown leather apron. The leprechaun lived by himself and made shoes. Like all leprechauns, he had his very own pot of gold hidden at the end of his very own rainbow. The leprechaun had a wee bit of a garden where he planted cabbages, onions and potatoes. Around the edge of the garden he grew clover. He was happy and full of fun. His neighbors came to his house to buy shoes or vegetables, and to watch the sing and dance a jig. One night the door opened with a creak. It was a treasure hunter. The man grabbed the leprechaun by his collar. Lets go, he said. Help! screamed the. leprechaun, pretending to be frightened For four long weary hours the two traveled up the mpuntain toward the rainbow. They kept climbing until they came to a lep-recha- - wrap the shoes, said the leprechaun. When the boy came into the house, he had two cabbages in his hands, and a four-lea- f clover hidden in his pocket. The boy gripped the leprechauns shoulder. I really need that pot of gold, he said. Stealing isnt very nice, said the leprechaun. It was raining as the leprechaun and the boy climbed the mountain. When they reached the lake there was a glorious rainbow in the sky. The boy touched the four leaf clover in his pocket, as the leprechaun led him over the slippery rocks. They climbed the mountain high above the clouds. All of.a sudden the northern winds blew the clouds away and the sun came out. Whpn the boy spotted the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, his heart almost stopped beating. He jumped onto the rainbow and rode it to the end. Quick as lightning the leprechaun reached into his pocket The earth began to quiver and shake as the aroma of magic hung heavy in thp air. Puffs of green smoke engulfed the pot of gold. The boys knees buckled as the leprechaun and the pot of gold disappeared. Leprechauns are not often seen these days, but they still have their very own pot of gold at the end of their very own rainbow. Leprechauns know the only way to keep that gold is to outwit those who try to steal it. I honest-to-goodne- lake. As the treasure hunter fol- lowed the leprechaun across some wet stones, he slipped. The leprechaun vanished. Before long, the leprechaun was back in his house making shoes. Knock! Knock! Standing in the doorway was a boy. Have you come to buy shoes? asked the leprechaun. The resourceful bery opened his hand and showed the tiny man some coins. Shoes for my mother, and cabbages for some soup. What! No pot of gold, laughed the leprechaun. The clever boy smiled.
