Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MARCH 11 1897 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks The Southern Utah News is saddened to hear of Councilwoman Macy Burgin's resignation from the Kanab City Council. Whether you agreed or disagreed with Burgin's stand on different issues, you could always be assured that she had studied the issue at length and arrived at her decision in an informed manner. m In her letter of resignation, Burgin brought up a few points of criticism about the Kanab City Council which merit discussion. We can only grow as a community, if we are willing to reflect on the past. Diversity of elected officials is crucially important to a growing community. As new residents move into Kanab from a variety of different places and backgrounds, it's imperative that our government consider that growth and those new residents when making decisions. While my intention is not to offend the many wonderful Mormon friends I have, the bottom line is that the majority of new residents moving to this community are not men and they are not LDS. But they do hold dear the very same things that Mormons do. They want to live in a dean, safe and wholesome environment, where they can live by the values which they hold dear. It's the duty of elected offidals to represent all of its electorate, not just the majority. The "good ol boy" system is not acceptable anymore. We would like to thank Macy Burgin for serving our community as an elected representative. We appredate her time, tears and dedication to making Kanab a better place. We will be watching as the next city council member is appointed. We hope Burgin's successor will be picked on his (or her) own merits, and not by church standing or residence longevity. The family of Scott Foster would like to thank all the wonderful people who have expressed concern, held special fasts, or made offers offinancial help following the unfortunate injury of our 16 year old son Scott. His injuries have left him paralyzed. Scott was taken to St. George by paramedics and from there to the University of Medical Utah Center in Salt Lake City where he underwent surgery on March 4 to fuse the 5th, 6th and 7th vertebrae to stabilize and prevent further damage. He is currently in intensive care, battling staff pneumonia and is expected to remain at the University Hospital for three to six months. Scott enjoys football, snow boarding and eating Nutty Bars. life-flight- ed fighting fire with fire. There is only one thing new about Babbitts new strategy, however, since it is obvious that thinning forests reduces the risk of wild fire. The new aspect of Babbitts tinkering is that he is mounting his incineration policy as a substitute for and not as an adjunct to a viable timber industry. You remember the timber industry. This is that vile plunderer of Mother Nature that made it possible for people of little political value and even less biocentric spir itual awareness to greedily generate liveable wages for themselves and lumber for us.
