Show D2 Friday, Sept. 17, Davis County Clipper 1999 Sports commentary Buzz provide thrills, while fans provide little support I love baseball. Let me clarify that. I LOME baseball. You know how some guys love their mom? Well that's how much I love baseball. Just kidding mom, I love you just as much. The pur- pose of my column this week is to express two different topics and two differ- ent emo- tions. we were going to the Triple-- Vegas. Even though we didn't make it there, man, what a run. The second issue I would like to address is not quite as pleasant as a team that wins 70 percent of its last season games, and pushes a playoff senes to a maximum five games. No, not quite that pleasant at all. What I am speaking of. is Buzz fan's lack of supn baseball in Utah. port for I guess I just have to face it Everyone loves football around here at this time of year, but come on people. Franklin Covey Field averaged anywhere between eight and nine thousand fans to regular season games this year, pretty good numbers for a minor league team. This was for a team that hung around second place all season long. But when the Buzz went on their tear, the fans obviously lost interest. When I walked into the ballpark Saturday night (Friday I was covering football) and saw barely fans, I felt like the kid on Christmas morning who finds that Santa Claus brought him just what he didnt want. The Buzz only averaged 5,324 fans during their weekend stint against the Canadians at Franklin Covey. This was the season, that place should have been sold out all three games. post-seaso- Buzz. The Buzz did something this year that statisticalseemed almost impossible. After being 3 12 games out with six games left, they went on a rampage and made the playoffs. I immediately booked hotel reservations, and started saving gambling money, because I just knew ly KAYSVILLE - The Cottonwood Colts came into Morgan Fieldhouse and walloped the Darts of Davis i a lightning quick 0 contest. Davis started the first game out like gang busters as they took a fast 1 lead. However, that was all the momentum they could muster as they lost the lead and the first game 2-- 6-- 15-- 8. Davis head coach Chris Fish feels that the Lady Darts have all the talent in the world, but experience is severely lacking. We have a very young team that has a lot of mental lapses, said Fish. In the first game we had the game all the adrenallin in the world and then we just made bad decisions, and we paid for it. The Lady Colts didn't take their foot off the pedal as they kept pouring on the gas until they had beaten Davis soundly. In the second game, the Colts took a quick 10-- 0 'aad before the Darts could even get out off the starting line. Cottonwood was just too overpowering and the Darts could not get out of the blocks. However, the Lady Darts didnt just simply roll over and play dead. They did make a run at the game. With Cottonwood having a 10-- 0 lead, Davis inched their way back until they only trailed 13-From that point, the wheels fell off the wagon and Cottonwood took over the game and finally took the win 15-Even with this game out of reach early. Coach Fish is still upbeat about this team and this 9. year. We have no varsity experience and this team is totally new. They have played on a lot of club teams, we just need some kind of glue that will bring us together said Fish. This is a very tough Region, and right now Skyline and Layton are the number one and number two teams. But the funny thing is, Viewmont is struggling and they have beaten Skvline and Mountain View- - in tournaments, who are number one in the State. Next season when Ortiz is hitting 40 for the Twins, then youll feel bad. It wasnt all horrible though. With everyone else home watching the 49ers get killed on Sunday, only true baseball fans joined together at the Buzzs last game of the season. All the families and couples were left behind, allowing us, the Buzz faithful to express our gratitude for an amazing run and a great team. So, to the Buzz I say wonderful job guys. You were as clutch as it gets. And to many of the Buzz fans, shame on you. I could be in Vegas now! tain game. On the Colts side of the floor the first year head coach Bob Berrett, who has coached at Churchhill Junior High for years and has taken over the Lady Colts program, concurred with Fish about the inexperience of the Darts. They are very young, but so are we. We only start two seniors and our freshman Connie Dangerfield was our leading hitter in the game, said Berrett. We had good games from Heather Hummell who had six kills and other girls stepped up. We have played a lot of these girls on club teams, they just need to get experience. There were so few fans at the games on Saturday and Sunday, we couldn't even get a beer man to pass us on a regular basis. Folks, nothing is more annoying than having to keep getting up when youre trying to watch playoff baseball. Nick Velarde, 2, 2: 3, 5: David Ortiz is Buzz hero as season ends BY JORDAN LIVINGSTON Clipper Sports Editor SALT LAKE - The Salt Lake Buzzs storybook run to the Pacific Coast League playoffs ended Sunday afternoon as the Vancouver Canadians eliminated the Buzz in game 5, with a 8 victory. Salt Lake had virtually no chance to make it to the PCL needing six wins at the end of the 9-- semi-final- s, season. The Buzz then proceeded to go on a convenient winning streak, beating Fresno on the last day of the season with a two-ou- t, e home run by catcher Matt LeCroy in the ninth inning. The Buzz met the Vancouver Canadians in the PCL Pacific six-ga- two-stnk- Division Championship. LAIUCERS continued from Cl direct kick inside the box. Vancouver quickly took the first two games of the series, and it seemed that the Buzzs luck had run out. However, Salt Lake made for a weekend to remember as they tied the series with consecutive wins on Friday and Saturday night in Salt 2-- 2, Lake. The hero and inspiration for the Buzz came from first basemen David Ortiz, the PCEs leading RBI man. Ortiz suffered a sprained knee in game one of the series in Vancouver, and sat out in the game two loss. When Ortiz was left off the lineup again in game three, he refused to not play, convincing Buzz manager Phil Roof that the game was too important for him to sit out. Roof used Ortiz as the designated hitter in the next three games. But Stratford added to her collection of highlight-ree- l saves to preserve the shutout for the Lancers. Shots on goal were about even for both teams. In the third inning of the game, Ortiz hit a home run, providing the Buzz with the energy to score seven more runs and win the game We made it to the playoffs, he said after the game. Now that were here what weve got to do is win. Ortiz again came through in game four on Friday night, hitting a mammoth three-ru- n blast to carry the Buzz to a win. With the win, the Buzz forced a deciding game five, and proved that their late season surge was anything but a fluke. In the final game Sunday afternoon, it looked as if nothing could stand in the way of fate, as the Buzz went into the ninth inning with a 5 8-- L 6-- 4 7-- lead. Salt Lake's hopes were shattered however, as the Canadians showed Northridge keeper Nickie Torrez helped her squad with excellent fine saves. Northridge will play its next game at Skyline while Layton hosts disciplined, fundamental hitting, taking reliever Tony Fiore for five base hits and four runs. Fiore allowed the winning run in game two to score, with a wild pitch in Vancouver. We played our hearts out, said Roof in the Buzz locker room. I dont think many people expected us to be here today! This years stint in the playoffs was Salt Lake's first trip to the post season since The Buzzs major league affiliate, the Minnesota Twins waited until the playoffs were over before making any late season promotions in September. Ortiz, who has already hit nine home runs this season with the Twins, was called up for the rest of 19. Minnesotas season. Clearfield.
