United Way of Davis County celebrated its 25th anniversary at a kickoff breakfast on Sept 8 Wendell Wild, West Bountiful city manager and this year's Umted Way campaign chairman announced the new campaign goal of $1,050,000 to support human service agencies. The breakfast was attended by 160 community leaders The kick-of- f featured Davis County Commissioner. Gayle A Stevenson, who was the first Umted and Way campaign chairman Channel 2 chief meteorologist Sterling Poulson, who also acted as master of ceremonies. Stevenson praised the generosity of the Umted Way volunteers Give while you live, so you know where it goes, he said He recognized Umted W'ay of Davis County for joining the de Toqueville Society, which takes its name from Alexis de Toqueville, a Frenchman who was inspired by the American spint of philanthropy during his travels in the early 1800s. De Toqueville realized that Americans, armed with their equality, helped each other in times of need I le saw volun; teensm as a way of life that was typi- cally American Individuals quahfytd be a member of this society by donating $10,000 or more to the Llmted Way endowment fund United Way has had two de Toqueville members in the past three yean, he said. Stevenson also encouraged participants to understand how Umted Way works He said the first time he attended a kickoff 25 years ago, he didnt know what Umted Way was about, but he soon discovered how a small group of volunteers can make a big difference with Umted Way Poulson descnbed how the recent Salt Lake City tornado blew down most of the trees in its path He explained that trees that grow together with intertwined roots are able to withstand many of the elements He went on to say that people who live in communities, like these trees, are stronger when they help each other He noted that is why it is important to support causes such as Umted Way Poulson also recognized Umted Way of Davis County past board chairmen who were in attendance for then dedication and leadership Wild announced the results of 13 pacesetter companies running early Umted W'ay campaigns.
