Show 23 2004 Kanab Area Vacation Guide www.kanabguide.com Picture Yourself in the Saddle with Red Rock Ride By Dixie Brunner Picturing yourself in a scene from Billy Crystals hit movie City Slickers isnt difficult when taking the Red Rock Ride. The six day trail ride offers folks the opportunity to closely experience three national parks, as well as ride in some of the most spectacular scenery in the entire west. Six days in the saddle may sound unappealing to those accustomed to modern conveniences, but with the amenities the Red Rock Ride great, said David of England. Ive seen places that Ive only dreamed of. The Red Rock Ride was the brainstorm of the Houston and Mangum families who wanted to share their hospitality and pride in southern Utah with folks around the country. The Houston KANAB through the national parks for over 20 years, could furnish the horses, mules and handsome wranglers. Together, they knew they had something special to offer people seeking western adventure. provides, cowboys have never had it so good. I never knew there were so many stars, said one woman from Australia. I was awestruck that first night when I looked up at the sky, free from pollution and city lights, and saw all those stars. Ive never had a holiday this family, long known for their superior food catering abilities in their restaurant and on fire locations, could provide the food and sleeping arrangements. The Mangum family, which has guided horse riding tours Red Rock riders, who come from all over the world, are picked up on the first day in Las Vegas. Zion National Park is their first stop, where first big sky experience. The pinnacles, spires and buttresses of Bryce Canyon National Park provide the backdrop for the second day of riding. The riders thread through the jagged spires on small mountain trails. While most participants have ridden horses before, the narrowness of the mountain trails causes even the most experienced a racing heart. On day three, a ride down Straight Canyon that has minimal visitation overlooks the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The longest leg of the journey on day four takes riders down through the Box of the Paria. Red they meet their wranglers, hosts and horses. The Rock riders get to travel on the same dramatic, white sandstone mountains of Zion give narrow passage that outlaws, rustlers and participants their first glimpse of the stunning scenery cowboys used decades ago. Camp that night is at the Paria town site, an old ghost town where to come. Campers are fed hearty meals, and sleep under the stars that night, giving many their many Hollywood westerns have been filmed. Unlike their cowboy predecessors, Red Rock riders get a break on their saddle-wear- y bums (as the English people referred to it.) While their horses, tents and food are being trailered to the North Rim, the riders get to visit Kanab to shop and have lunch at Houstons Trails End restaurant. They are later driven to the North Rim for an early evening ride to Uncle Jims Point on the edge of the Grand Canyon. With their sixth day of riding at hand, Red Rock participants are beginning to sadden-the- y know that their western adventure is soon to be over. The final day is an y trip into the Grand Canyon to Roaring Springs. The sound from the springs rolls like thunder, creating a kind of music all its own. After hugs and tears, riders say goodbye to their hosts and each other on the seventh day. Hearts are heavy as the urban cowboys bid farewell.
