Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion Letters Continued, from Page 4 Anybody who reads or studies history soon realizes that there is a pattern in the way this goes on. It is somewhat complex, but I will give a brief summary. Some strong willed people, or persons, get together and form a government. They realize from the onset that they have to set up something special, or it will fail quite quickly. Down through time those groups of people have gotten better and better at setting up a more perfect union, or system, of government, simply because they have the hard lessons ofthose who have tried and failed before them to learn from. So, this group of people sets up the best system they can, and then turns it over to itselfand its citizens to do the best that it, and they, can; similar to teaching a child the best you can and then sending him or her out into the world to see what they can make of it. Sadly enough we realize that both the child and the new government will come under immediate and effective fire by greedy, power hungry, or just plain uninformed people, who will try to lead it astray. In the past this force has eventually prevailed every time, leading to the destruction of that particular government, not to mention a lot of grief for the previously governed. So, now that we all realize this, what are we to do about it? Are we going to let the forces of atrophy, greed, laziness, complaisance, or lack of study doom us to repeat history, or are we going to take the information that is at hand and defend our freedom and our society? A turn out of less than 30 in a town of more than 100 families gives me the impression that we are along for the ride on the greatest fall that has ever happened on this earth. However, I dont want to believe that this is true. Please become informed, and please become involved. I realize that not everybody will agree on each point, but if we are all doing our honest best to understand the issues and the people involved with our government, right will prevail and we will enjoy freedom for many more years. joke. Zion Lutheran Church What does it cost you? Dear Editor: With most states facing drastic budget deficits, governments are examining expenditures and looking for efficient ways to save money within the state. One of the greatest cost savings to the state is getting people to buckle their safety belts on each and every ride. This simple, habitual action can not only save fives, it can save significant amounts of money each year. According to The Economic Impact of Motor Vehicle Crashes 2000, the cost of motor vehicle crashes that occurred in 2000 totaled $230.6 billion dollars. This is equal to approximately $820 foreachpersonfivingintheUnited MQOQ r three quarters of all crashes, primarily through insurance premiums, taxes and travel delay. Buckling up is still the most effective and immediate way to save fives, reduce injuries, and reduce economic costs from crashes on Americais roadways. Because we are all personally and financially affected when even one person does not buckle up, we all must be a part of the solution. Its simple - make sure every passenger is buckled up on every trip. Louis R. It is true that Clinton did lie under oath and Bush didnt, but at least Clinton never lied to start a war which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of soldiers, and then joke about how our war was unjustified, as he did recently with his infamous WMD States, and translates to increased taxes, health care, and insurance costs borne by society rather than by crash victims. On average, inpatient hospital care costs for unbuckled crash victims are 50 percent higher than for those who are belted and society bears 85 percent of those costs, not the individuals involved. Private insurers pay half of all motor vehicle crash costs, individual crash victims pay approximately 26 percent, and third parties such as uninvolved motorists delayed in traffic, charities, and health care providers pay about 14 percent.
