Show I The movie W2 isnt dying 1 We foresee an exciting thing happening in the movie industry! The problem that led to it is money. It costs too much to produce movies. Average tab is now close to $12 million. Ninety percent of all movies lose money! A' picture has to be bankable or the studios wont finance. So were up to our keysters in comicbook stuff like Goonies and Weird Science, teen comedies like Better off Dead and Police Academy II, garbage like Return of the Living Dead, and European Vacation, and gratuitous gore like Commando and Death Wish 3. Result: Ticket sales are down, video rentals up. The small, independently-mad- e pictures are the wave of the future. More and more pics are made away from Hollywood. More and more are made for $1 to $3 million by promising young filmmakers. (Examples: Dim Sum, Teen Wolf, Crossover Dreams, Attla, 7 Up and 28 Up, Stranger than Paradise and El Norte). Why not? If a $3 million movie can make money, why risk $10, $20 or $30 million? Could this mean well get more movies with stories (a good screenplay costs $250,000), instead of gross-ou- t, overdone special effects (which can cost $5 to $20 million)? Hooray for the little guy! sM By Dr. Allen Hasson Bring on Target business 1 Cinematic Sentiments Let's go to the movies! Cl 02 Target, trying to be both spy thriller and father-so- n drama, succeeds only marginally at both when encumbered with so many espionage cliches. Gene Hackman and Matt Dillon, however, are as good as ever, which is considerable. Rated R for strong profanity, some violence, brief nudity and sex. W2 Cl 03 inept it could give family films a bad name. Rated PG, but its really a G all the way. Michael Apteds (Coal Miners docu on the Daughter) formation of Stings new band. He has a fine little Latin combo, and e dreams of crossing over to the a its but, jungle man, pop charts, out there. Some of the characters in this business downer are likable and sympathetic, and the ending is a slight upper, but its mostly rerun of other sho-bi- z soapers...with a Latin beat of course. Rated R for much strong profanity. W2 gosh-awfull- y S4 Sting, almost thou persuadest me to be a jazz fan! Bring on the Night is music seems 04 SI Hopelessly contrived, laughingly simplistic, poorly acted tale of Boston kid visiting dad in Northwest woods, kidnapped, lost, rescued. Attla 04 S4 Beautifully realized story of champion Alaskan sled dog racer George Attla, replete with gorgeous scenery, rich native humor, fascinating Indian customs, wonderful cast and musical score, and fine profilm. duction values for a For all ages, including even sophisticated students of cinema, and young children. Won First Prize at U.S. Film Festival. Rated PG: we give it a G. W4 C4 low-budg- inside-the-reco- 3: II That was Then, Mines' W2 Cl 02 S4 Wetherby is one of those talkly little moodatmosphere pieces that will enthrall students of cinema because its so perfectly and exquisitely done. But it leaves the general audience with a queazy feeling because its empty and depressing Vanessa Redgrave is Oscarworthy as the spinster school teacher, a time bomb of smoldering sexuality, who sees a young man blow his brains out in her cottage. Throughout the movie, citizens of the little Peyton Place of Wetherby, England, talk about, and flashbacks show, what might have happened and why, with no clear resolution. David Hare, who wrote Plenty, wrote and directed. Rated R for bits of sex, nudity, profanity and bloody violence. W2 Cl 01 S2 Is this remake necessary? Must be; they already filmed a sequel. Richard Chamberlain helps Sharon Stone (Irr- econcilable Differences) find the fabled lost treasure. This is nonstop action, slapstick and rollicking humor, but there is more violence than you can shake a stick at. (The natives shake a lot of sticks, too.) It gets dizzying and benumbing, like Indiana Doom, and is made more so by the hyperactive Jerry Goldsmith musical score and overzealous sound effects. This is Now Cl 02 S3 That.. .This, Emilio Estevez (Breakfast Club; son of Martin Sheen; wrote this screenplay) has a lifelong friendship that somehow survives the ghastly pain of the teen years. Three directors have filmed S. E. Hinton novels; this one is more negative and dismal than Tex, but isnt surrealistic like Coppolas Rumble Fish. Its more like Coppolas Outsiders, with car stealing instead of gang fights. Hinton seems fond of stylistically indulging troubled youth, but appears unable to pull anything instructive or helpful from these unpleasant little exposes. Rated R for mild sex and violence, very strong profanity. y2 W2 In Marie W4 Cl 03 S4 Roger Donaldson (Bounty) in a directs Sissy Spacek g true story of Marie Ragghianti, who got appointed Tennessee State Parole Board chairman, and in 1976 tried to stop Governor Ray Blantons crooked administration from selling favors. Sissy is marvleous, and so is Maries real-lif- e attorney, Fred Thompson, who plays himself. This is thrilling, manipulative, sentimental, satisfying, patriotic stuff. Recommended age 14 and up.
