Most adults have learned to concentrate on a specific task and to ignore potential distractions. We can read, even though the TV is on, other voices can be heard, or traffic noises pour through the open window. This may seem simple, but paying attention is a skill that must be learned. Many students cant control their attention because they have never learned to focus their thoughts, energies and actions on the task at hand. Ordering a child to pay attention or threatening probably wont work. Instead, these methods may help your children improve their attention: self-tal- k 1. Use and images. Just as we use words to give directions to others, we can use them to guide our own actions. Golfers often mutter to themselves, Keep your eye on the ball. Dont look up. Carnivals and suppers were sponsored by churches and civic groups to a safe place to give spend Halloween night. Some of the more out going residents were driven to turning their homes into spook alleys and invited the gobblins who knocked at their doors inside for a little fright. Asking themselves questions about lessons helps students bring their wandering attention back to the task. Some general questions your children might ask themselves as they read: Who did what and why? Is the argument weak or strong? What do I think about this informmation? 3. Set specific goals. Examples: Read Treasure Island by Nov. 30. Master multiplication through 12 times 12 by March 15. Write Aunt Darlene a letter by Thursday. Write the goals down. Look at the list with Mike or Janie. Remember, a series of small goals are more likely to be reached than a single, overwhelming one. By the way, congratulations, class. They were joined in Provo by Kirk and Sandi Reynolds and baby daughter. They were guests of Lee and Marilyn Broadbent and sons, returning to their homes Sunday t evening. Erma Crawford of Orem visited last week at the home of John and Diane Crawford. Bruce Kay was seriously injured Sunday morning while deer hunting with a muzzle loader. He was taken to Salt Lake City by Life Flight. Lynn and LaVona Williams from Salt Lake City visited at the home of Blaine and Ellen Mortensen last week. Bobby Foster, the small son of Rick and Debbie Foster spent a few days in the Ashley Valley Medical Center the latter part of the week due to croup and asthma. Roger Merrell, a student at Trade Tech in Orem, spent the weekend home with his parents, Dallas and Marilyn Merrell. Glen and Toni Reynolds and son, Fred, went to Cody, Wyo., Thursday to attend the funeral of Glen's brother, Beldon Reynolds who died early last week of cancer. Ronda Olson spent Friday and Saturday in Salt Lake City on business. Lanny and Joy Kay were in Salt Lake City Saturday visiting with their son, Paul, who is attending the University of Utah.
